Spurs Shock Thunder in Game 7 Thriller to Reach NBA Finals
The San Antonio Spurs have booked their ticket to the NBA Finals, clinching a dramatic Game 7 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night. In a nail-biting contest that went down to the wire, the Spurs overcame the reigning champions on their home turf, ending the Thunder’s hopes of a second consecutive NBA title.
The series, a fierce battle for Western Conference supremacy, culminated in a decisive Game 7, with the Spurs emerging victorious with a 111-103 scoreline. The win was particularly poignant for the Spurs, who will now face the New York Knicks in a rematch of the 1999 NBA Finals. That historic series saw the Spurs dominate, securing a 4-1 victory and igniting a dynasty that would yield four championships in nine seasons.
Leading the charge for the triumphant Spurs was their towering French phenom, Victor Wembanyama. The 7-foot-4 sensation, the undisputed No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, was named the Western Conference Finals MVP. Overwhelmed with emotion following the momentous win, Wembanyama struggled to articulate the magnitude of the achievement.
“Realizing that some part of a childhood dream is going to come true… this feeling, I can’t explain it. It’s so powerful,” Wembanyama shared, visibly moved.
The emotions were captured by NBA on ESPN, with a widely shared post on Twitter/X showcasing Wembanyama’s jubilant and tearful reaction after leading the Spurs to the NBA Finals.

The Spurs’ journey to the NBA Finals marks their first appearance since 2014. They are set to return to San Antonio for Game 1 of the championship series, scheduled for Wednesday. Wembanyama, however, is already looking ahead, stating, “It means everything. [But] we want four more. It’s not done.”
While Wembanyama contributed a solid 22 points to the Game 7 effort, the Spurs’ victory was a collective triumph. Julian Champagnie proved to be a pivotal offensive force, sinking an impressive 18 of his 20 three-point attempts. This remarkable shooting display, coupled with the team’s resilience, helped the Spurs defy the odds and secure a Game 7 win on the road.
For the Oklahoma City Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the charge with a valiant 35 points and nine assists. However, despite his stellar performance, the Thunder were unable to defend their title. This outcome ensures that the NBA will crown a new champion for the eighth consecutive season. Other notable contributors for the Thunder included Cason Wallace with 17 points, and Jared McCain and Alex Caruso, who each added 12 points.
A Game of Shifting Momentum
Unlike the preceding games in the series, which often saw comfortable leads established by the fourth quarter, Game 7 was a true spectacle of fluctuating fortunes. The Thunder had experienced leads of 11 points in Game 3 and 10 in Game 5, while the Spurs had commanded leads of 18 in Game 4 and a commanding 26 in Game 6. These margins had, for the most part, held firm.
However, Game 7 presented a different narrative. It was a rollercoaster contest from the outset. The Spurs established an early advantage, leading by as many as 14 points in the first half. They extended their lead to 11 in the third quarter, only to witness the Thunder mount determined comebacks on both occasions.
The Spurs, however, found another gear in the fourth quarter, pulling away once more and daring the Thunder to match their intensity. Unfortunately for the reigning champions, who were already hampered by the absence of Jalen Williams due to a hamstring injury, they simply ran out of steam.
Season of Dominance
The San Antonio Spurs’ victory in the Western Conference Finals is the culmination of a season where they demonstrated significant dominance over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Throughout the regular season and the playoffs, the Spurs managed to win eight of their twelve matchups against the Thunder. Ultimately, it was their performance in the most crucial contest of the season that mattered the most, securing their place on the grandest stage in basketball.
