Blues Hooking Dilemma: Three Contenders Emerge for State of Origin 2 Spot
The New South Wales coaching staff are facing a crucial decision following the unfortunate injury to hooker Blayke Brailey. Brailey, a vital impact player off the bench in the opening State of Origin clash, has been ruled out of Game 2 after fracturing his arm in Cronulla’s recent victory over Manly. While the dynamic dummy-half is hopeful of returning for the series decider, his absence presents an immediate challenge for coach Laurie Daley.
Daley himself confirmed on Saturday that three players are firmly in contention to fill the void left by Brailey. These candidates are Api Koroisau, Connor Watson, and Wayde Egan, each bringing a unique skillset and Origin experience to the table.
“All three of those guys will be in the conversation,” Daley stated. “Whoever can play well between now and when we select the side may well find themselves on that bench. For us, it’s very important. We saw the impact of Blayke. If you get momentum in today’s game from dummy-half and put pressure on the opposition, that was a real strength. There is an opportunity there for someone if they play well in the next couple of weeks.”
The selection landscape sees a mix of established Origin campaigners and potential debutants. Connor Watson, who featured in five of the six games across the 2024 and 2025 series, was surprisingly omitted from the Game 1 squad. Api Koroisau boasts four Origin appearances to his name, though his last outing was in 2023. Wayde Egan, meanwhile, would be making his maiden State of Origin appearance should he be selected in Daley’s 19-man squad.
Key Contenders for the Number 9 Role:
- Api Koroisau: A seasoned campaigner with proven Origin performances. His experience and ability to control the game from dummy-half make him a strong candidate.
- Connor Watson: Known for his versatility and work rate, Watson offers the ability to play multiple positions, including hooker and lock forward. His previous involvement in winning NSW series adds valuable experience.
- Wayde Egan: A potential debutant, Egan’s inclusion would signify a faith in a new generation of NSW talent. His form leading into the selection will be crucial.
Expert Opinions Lean Towards Experience
The debate surrounding the best replacement has already ignited discussions among rugby league’s most respected figures. Speaking on Friday night, former NSW captains Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler both weighed in with their predictions.
Andrew Johns expressed a strong inclination towards Api Koroisau. “If you said to me now, ‘Who would Laurie pick?’, I would say if Api Koroisau comes back and plays well, I think it’s Api Koroisau,” Johns commented.
Brad Fittler acknowledged the strategic advantages of different selections. “The other thing you can do is carry Connor Watson as well,” Fittler suggested. “And Connor Watson gives you the ability if something happens, he plays a bit of lock forward, bit of hooker as well. He’s done it for NSW before, he’s been part of winning series, so there’s experience there.” Fittler also highlighted the positive aspect of having multiple strong options. “But there’s good options, that’s the handy thing. Laurie’s in a pretty good position where he’s got players that have got State of Origin experience, and also the six-man bench gives you some flexibility.”
The introduction of a six-man interchange bench has indeed altered tactical considerations for coaches. Previously, the need to cover multiple positions might have favoured a versatile utility player like Watson. However, with an extended bench, the opportunity now exists to carry two specialist hookers, allowing for greater depth and specialised impact in that crucial position. This added flexibility means Daley has a wealth of options at his disposal as he aims to secure a vital win in Game 2 and keep the State of Origin series alive. The performance of these three players in the coming weeks will undoubtedly be under intense scrutiny.
