Padres’ Bench Bat Dilemma

Padres’ $15 Million Investment: What’s Next for KBO Slugger Sung-Mun Song?

The San Diego Padres made a significant splash in the recent offseason by investing in their offence, most notably through the acquisition of KBO slugger Sung-Mun Song. A four-year, $15 million deal was inked, sparking a flicker of excitement among fans who hoped the speedy infielder, with a proven track record of hitting over 20 home runs in Korea, could inject much-needed dynamism into the Padres’ middling offence.

A Call-Up and Limited Opportunities

The initial opportunity for Song to prove his worth arrived sooner than anticipated. Following an injury to Jake Cronenworth, who was placed on the injured list with concussion symptoms, Song was promoted to the major league roster. During his time in the minor leagues, Song demonstrated a promising ability to make solid contact, posting a .293/.364/.354 slash line with a .718 OPS. While these numbers indicated a good eye at the plate and a knack for getting on base, they didn’t quite showcase the prodigious power that had drawn attention from Korea.

Heading into his major league debut, the expectation was that Song would be eased into proceedings. During Spring Training, he was lauded for his potential as a versatile, super-utility player, offering tantalising possibilities with his bat. His first major league start against the San Francisco Giants earlier this season saw him contribute positively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

However, since that promising start, Song’s playing time has been surprisingly limited. Instead of featuring Song, the Padres have opted to deploy Fernando Tatis Jr. at second base, with a lineup that has often included Miguel Andujar, Nick Castellanos, and Gavin Sheets. While this strategy has, for the most part, yielded positive results for San Diego’s offence, Song has only managed to start seven out of his 16 appearances. This scarcity of playing time has inevitably led to questions surrounding his role and future with the club.

The Lingering Questions Surrounding Song’s Usage

Song’s journey to MLB has been a significant one, having spent his entire career prior to this season in the KBO. In 824 games in Korea, he compiled an impressive .283/.347/.431 slash line, including 80 home runs. Like many international players transitioning to a new league, there was an inherent assumption that his production might see a slight dip in the majors. While his power numbers have indeed tapered off, it’s crucial to consider the limited sample size he’s been afforded.

This is precisely where the core of the issue lies. Song has not been given a substantial platform to demonstrate his capabilities. Despite the Padres’ offence experiencing recent struggles, the team has seemingly displayed a lack of confidence in Song’s readiness to consistently perform at the major league level. However, this raises a pertinent question: if his bat isn’t deemed ready, why isn’t he being sent back to Triple-A to continue his development?

The current situation presents a conundrum. If San Diego lacks faith in his offensive prowess against major league pitching, a stint in the minors would be a logical step. Conversely, if they believe he possesses the necessary skills, he needs to be afforded more consistent playing time. Currently, Song’s opportunities have largely been confined to late-game appearances as a defensive replacement at second base, typically when the Padres hold a comfortable lead, and Tatis Jr. shifts back to right field.

Given the Padres’ recent offensive woes, why not provide Song with a more extended opportunity to prove himself? While Nick Castellanos is often viewed as a more established and reliable bat, his performance this season has been underwhelming, batting just .186 overall and .167 in his last seven contests. Allowing Song to play second base and face major league pitching, while reinstating Tatis Jr. to his familiar role in right field, could be a strategic move that benefits the team.

If the coaching staff harbours concerns about his ability to handle big-league pitching, then sending him to El Paso to hone his skills would be a sensible approach. However, if he is deemed ready, he needs to be played. The current scenario, where he remains largely on the bench, is not a sustainable strategy for Song to adapt to the rigours of Major League Baseball.

A Deep and Talented Bench Creates a Logjam

A significant factor contributing to Song’s limited role is the sheer depth and talent present on the Padres’ bench. San Diego arguably boasts one of the most formidable benches in MLB. The group, which includes Miguel Andujar, Nick Castellanos, Ty France, Bryce Johnson, and Song himself, has been well-assembled. Andujar, initially expected to be a platoon option against left-handed pitching, has instead become the team’s everyday designated hitter.

Beyond Andujar, the remaining bench players have consistently made valuable contributions. Manager Craig Stammen has a well-documented tendency to effectively utilise his bench players. Among this group, Ty France has recently emerged as the most potent offensive threat, boasting a .350 batting average with two home runs in his last seven games. This surge in production has, understandably, pushed Song further down the pecking order for starting opportunities. However, with Cronenworth’s impending return from concussion protocol, Song will likely face a demotion to the minor leagues unless his role sees a significant shift soon.

Looking ahead, it’s also conceivable that the Padres might consider calling up another prospect to bolster their roster. Outfielder Jase Bowen has shown promise and could have been a candidate for a call-up when Jackson Merrill experienced a back injury. While Bowen might still be considered for a call-up, potentially in place of Bryce Johnson, a more probable scenario would involve him replacing Song, especially if the latter’s struggles to secure playing time persist.
