A Memorable Farewell for Sam Kerr
Sam Kerr, the captain of the Matildas, delivered a record-equalling moment that marked the end of an extraordinary career with Chelsea. The 32-year-old scored a stunning goal that not only sealed a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Women’s Super League but also saw her equal Fran Kirby’s all-time goals record for the club. This final game at Stamford Bridge was made even more special by the presence of her family, including her one-year-old son, Jagger.
Kerr and her wife, Kristie Mewis, welcomed their son Jagger in May last year. On the day of the match, Jagger accompanied Kerr onto the pitch, creating a heartwarming scene as the Matildas skipper walked out for what would be her final appearance as a Blues player. The emotional atmosphere was further heightened by the farewell of another veteran, Millie Bright, who had spent a trophy-laden career with Chelsea, winning 20 pieces of silverware.
The match itself was a celebration of two departing legends. Kerr’s goal came in the 34th minute, a sublime volley that proved to be the decisive moment in the game. It was her 116th goal for Chelsea in her 158th and final game for the club. Over six-and-a-half years, Kerr helped Chelsea win 12 trophies, including five WSL titles. Her performance was a fitting conclusion to a remarkable chapter in her career.
Kerr expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to play against Manchester United, a team she has scored many memorable goals against. “It was an amazing day, kind of fitting to play against Man United, a team I’ve scored so many of my favourite goals against,” she said after the game. “And to score one like that today was awesome.”
Kerr is expected to move to America to be closer to her family and continue her playing career in the NWSL. She acknowledged the difficulty of leaving but emphasized her appreciation for the support from Chelsea fans. “Thank you to everyone who I’ve played with since I’ve been representing you guys,” she said. “Week in, week out, every single minute for you guys. I’ve had some great personal memories both on and off the pitch, so thank you to all of you. Hopefully, you support me wherever I go.”

The farewell was not just about the goal or the trophies; it was also about the bond between Kerr and her family. She spoke about the significance of walking out with her son, Jagger. “He’s born in Chelsea, so it’s kind of cute, and a nice little finish, but it was special to walk out with him and have my family here. A really sad day, but happy day, I guess,” she added.
Kerr also highlighted the importance of finishing her career alongside Millie Bright, whom she described as a great teammate. “It’s also fitting I end level with Fran after we played some pretty good football together,” she said. “But I mean, every goal to me for this club is special, I enjoyed every minute today. It’s just, honestly, the biggest honour to play for this club, and I have so many amazing memories which I’ll carry with me forever.”
As the Stamford Bridge faithful gave both Kerr and Bright a standing ovation, the emotional weight of the occasion was clear. For Kerr, it was a bittersweet moment, marking the end of a chapter that will always hold a special place in her heart.
