Korea Expressway Corporation Parts Ways with Head Coach Ahead of Championship Finals Amid Controversy
Seoul, South Korea – In a surprising development just days before the commencement of the championship finals, the Korea Expressway Corporation women’s professional volleyball team has decided not to extend the contract of head coach Kim Jong-min. The decision, conveyed to Coach Kim on March 26th, marks an abrupt end to his tenure with the club, which has been under scrutiny due to ongoing assault allegations.
The club’s contract with Coach Kim is set to expire on March 31st. Consequently, the highly anticipated championship finals, scheduled to begin on April 1st, will proceed without his leadership. The team is expected to be guided by an interim coaching system, with head coach Kim Young-rae stepping in to lead the squad through the crucial postseason matches.
The departure of Coach Kim, who successfully steered the team to the top of the regular league standings this season, has sent ripples through the volleyball community. Reports suggest that the Korea Expressway Corporation, a public enterprise, felt significant pressure to address the controversy surrounding allegations of assault against the coach. Coach Kim is currently facing a summary indictment related to these charges, which reportedly include incidents such as throwing a television remote control and physically accosting a team coach by grabbing his neck.
While many anticipated that the organization would allow Coach Kim to remain at the helm until the conclusion of the postseason, the club ultimately opted for an immediate separation. This decision underscores the sensitive nature of the allegations and the potential reputational risks for a public entity.
Coach Kim has reportedly denied the assault allegations. As of this report, no definitive court ruling has been issued, nor has any disciplinary action been taken by the Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO). This lack of official sanction has led some within the volleyball circles to express the view that the club’s decision to terminate his contract prematurely is a harsh measure, particularly given his success in leading the team to a regular league championship.
Coach Kim’s association with the Korea Expressway Corporation began in March 2016, and he has been instrumental in shaping the team’s performance over the past decade. His coaching prowess was evident in the 2017-2018 season when he guided the team to a coveted combined championship title. More recently, in the 2022-2023 season, despite finishing third in the regular league, he orchestrated a remarkable comeback in the championship finals, leading his team to victory against Heungkuk Saengmyeong with a hard-fought 3-2 series win.
A representative from the Korea Expressway Corporation offered a cautious statement when approached for comment. “Nothing has been officially decided yet,” the source stated. “We will announce our position once a decision is made.” This indicates that while the immediate coaching situation is addressed for the finals, the long-term coaching strategy and the club’s official stance on the matter are still under deliberation. The coming days are expected to bring further clarity regarding the future leadership of the championship-contending volleyball team.
