Bulldogs Coach Slams ‘Bad Influences’ in Ugle-Hagan Suns Move

Beveridge’s Heartbreak: “Bad Influences” Derailed Ugle-Hagan’s Bulldogs Career

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has spoken candidly about the off-field struggles that led to Jamarra Ugle-Hagan’s departure from the club, revealing the team was “broken-hearted” by the former No. 1 draft pick’s journey. Ugle-Hagan, 23, did not feature in a single senior game in 2025, a season marred by significant personal challenges that ultimately resulted in his trade to the Gold Coast Suns for pick 74 – a move that surprised many within the Australian Football League (AFL) community.

Beveridge has now shed light on the situation, emphasizing that while the Bulldogs offered comprehensive support, certain external factors proved insurmountable. “He just lost his way off-field,” Beveridge stated in a recent interview. “We were obviously really concerned about it, and we are broken-hearted about it to a degree because we cared so much for him. So, I think all of us just hope he is finding his way. And then he can play.”

The Bulldogs coach elaborated on the complexities of Ugle-Hagan’s situation, noting, “Sometimes you can’t control the bad influences in someone’s life. And the vices they end up becoming vulnerable to. So, we just hope he is going to be able to cleanse himself of all that and find his best footy again, and there will be no one happier than me.”

The club proactively sought assistance from the AFL to support Ugle-Hagan throughout the trying period. This support included arranging a stint in a rehabilitation facility after concerns began to escalate in late 2024. “Yes, we did [support him fully], but there are things that are out of your control,” Beveridge acknowledged. “Unfortunately, he met people who influenced him in the wrong way.”

The trajectory of Ugle-Hagan’s career at the Bulldogs took a dramatic turn from what was once envisioned as a fairytale. Drafted with the coveted No. 1 pick in 2020, he showed immense promise, kicking 103 goals in 67 games and was widely seen as the future spearhead of the Bulldogs’ forward line. However, his 2025 season was ultimately derailed by personal battles.

Ugle-Hagan’s Own Account: Hitting Rock Bottom

Ugle-Hagan himself has previously spoken about the depth of his struggles. “All the noises actually sent me to a rehab facility for my mental health,” he shared last year. The situation became so severe that he felt compelled to take drastic measures to manage his well-being.

“It got to a point where I had to give my car to a mate so I couldn’t drive, I just didn’t trust myself driving,” he revealed. “There were times when I would think about – to be honest with you – was it even worth living. I went through a struggle where I didn’t want to leave the house. I hit rock bottom, and found [the] basement.”

A New Dawn on the Gold Coast

The narrative surrounding Ugle-Hagan has since shifted significantly as he embarks on a new chapter with the Gold Coast Suns. Since signing a one-year deal, he has been actively showcasing his commitment to his recovery and his football career through consistent social media updates. These posts often feature him training rigorously, enjoying the Queensland lifestyle, and embracing his new environment.

A notable aspect of his rejuvenated outlook is his reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Liv Kelly. The couple confirmed their rekindled romance in December, following a previous split at the end of 2024. Ugle-Hagan recently posted a heartfelt birthday message to Kelly on Instagram, expressing his gratitude for her presence and influence in his life. “HB [Happy birthday] to my girl. My love. My best friend. Very grateful for you and for the way you’ve guided me toward the right path. I’ve got you forever,” he wrote.

Kelly reciprocated the sentiment publicly, describing him as “the man who made today and everyday special.” The couple has been frequently photographed together, enjoying the coastal scenery and life on the Gold Coast, with Ugle-Hagan appearing visibly more relaxed and revitalised.

Signs of Progress on the Field

The positive impact of this change of scenery is already being noted by his new team. Suns assistant coach Shaun Grigg commented on Ugle-Hagan’s integration and work ethic. “To his credit, he’s showed up and earned the respect of everyone so far,” Grigg stated. “He’s put his head down and worked really hard.”

For ardent Bulldogs supporters, witnessing their former highly-touted forward thriving in Suns colours might evoke a sense of melancholy, particularly if he rediscovers the electrifying form that once marked him as one of the league’s most promising young talents.

However, from Beveridge’s perspective, the focus remains firmly on Ugle-Hagan’s personal well-being. “If he finds continuity and a wholesome lifestyle, he’s a chance again,” Beveridge said. “And we just want the best for him.”
