Lindsey Vonn’s hopes of a final Olympic flourish were tragically cut short on Sunday as she crashed out of the women’s downhill event at the Milan-Cortina Games. The American skiing legend, attempting to secure a fourth Olympic medal, suffered a devastating fall just seconds into her run, bringing an abrupt end to her ambitious bid for glory in her signature discipline.

The incident occurred on the formidable Olimpia delle Tofane piste in Cortina d’Ampezzo, a venue where Vonn has historically excelled. Despite sustaining a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee just over a week prior to the race, the 41-year-old athlete bravely decided to compete. Her courageous effort, however, ended in anguish and pain as she hit the firm snow face-first after a mere 13 seconds. The fall was severe, with Vonn rolling down the slope with her skis still attached, raising concerns of further significant damage to her already compromised knee.

Medical personnel quickly attended to the distraught skier, who was later airlifted from the course. Spectators in the stands, acknowledging her legendary status and valiant attempt, offered a poignant salute with sustained applause.

The crash sent shockwaves through the competition. Vonn’s teammate, Breezy Johnson, was visibly distressed, covering her face in dismay from the leader’s chair. Johnson herself had delivered a strong performance, narrowly missing out on the lead by a mere 0.04 seconds to Germany’s Emma Aicher.

Vonn, a globally recognised figure in the world of sport and an icon of alpine skiing, had expressed confidence in her ability to challenge the current generation of elite female skiers, many of whom are significantly younger. Before the Games, she had indicated plans to participate in the team combined event and the super-G, but these prospects now appear highly unlikely. A prolonged recovery period could potentially signal the conclusion of her comeback to the sport in her early forties.

This return to competitive skiing followed Vonn’s initial retirement in 2019. She made the decision to come back in November 2024 after undergoing surgery to partially replace her right knee, aiming to alleviate persistent pain.

Prior to her Olympic setback, Vonn had been a formidable contender. Her performance in the World Cup season leading up to the Games was exceptional. She had secured a podium finish in every downhill race, including two victories in St. Moritz and Zauchensee. She also achieved two top-three finishes in the super-G. Had she not experienced a crash in the final World Cup downhill event in Crans Montana at the end of January, she would have been widely considered a strong candidate for gold in Cortina.

Vonn’s Olympic dream, once so close to a triumphant conclusion, now lies in tatters. Her brave pursuit of a final Olympic medal, against considerable odds and physical challenges, has culminated in a deeply unfortunate end to what has been one of the most anticipated storylines of the Winter Olympics. The incident underscores the extreme risks inherent in elite alpine skiing and the immense courage displayed by athletes who push their bodies to the absolute limit.

Key Moments of Vonn’s Career and Comeback

  • Olympic Success: Vonn is a highly decorated Olympian, having won multiple medals throughout her career. Her most significant Olympic victory was the gold medal in the downhill at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
  • World Cup Dominance: She holds numerous World Cup records, solidifying her status as one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time. Her consistent performances across disciplines showcased her versatility and enduring talent.
  • Injury and Resilience: Vonn has faced numerous significant injuries throughout her career, demonstrating remarkable resilience and determination in her return to competition after each setback.
  • Comeback Bid: Her return to skiing in late 2024, following knee surgery, was a testament to her unyielding passion for the sport and her desire to compete at the highest level once more.
  • Milan-Cortina Dreams: The 2026 Milan-Cortina Games represented a final opportunity for Vonn to add to her Olympic legacy, a dream tragically interrupted by her fall.

The future of Vonn’s skiing career remains uncertain following this latest injury. While her competitive aspirations may have been dashed, her impact on the sport and her inspiring journey of perseverance will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy.
