New Cabinet Line-up Poised for Royal Endorsement Amidst Political Realignment

Bangkok, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has indicated that the newly formed cabinet is on the cusp of being submitted for royal endorsement, marking a significant step in the formation of the next administration. While addressing the media on Tuesday, Mr. Anutin downplayed speculation surrounding the absence of prominent legal scholar Borwornsak Uwanno from the anticipated ministerial roster.

The Prime Minister confirmed that the list of proposed cabinet ministers is in order and acknowledged that Pakorn Nilprapunt, the secretary-general of the Council of State, is slated to assume the role of deputy prime minister with responsibility for legal affairs. This confirmation addresses earlier reports that had suggested Mr. Uwanno might retain this crucial portfolio.

Mr. Anutin characterized such changes as a natural evolution within political cycles. He emphasized that each cabinet formation represents a distinct term, even if the prime minister remains the same, signifying a fresh administration. He revealed that he had personally communicated with Mr. Borwornsak Uwanno, highlighting their ongoing professional collaboration and assuring that there was “nothing unusual” about the situation.

Sources within the coalition suggest that cabinet nominees have already submitted their credentials to the Secretariat of the Prime Minister for thorough vetting. The anticipated new cabinet is expected to consist of 35 members, with a deliberate omission of one position to allow for potential future adjustments and appointments.

Insider reports from coalition parties indicate a strategic allocation of ministerial portfolios. The Palang Pracharath Party, despite holding five seats in the House of Representatives, is reportedly not slated to receive a cabinet quota. Instead, key positions are said to be allocated to the Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) and the Pheu Thai Party, signaling a shift in power dynamics within the governing coalition.

Pheu Thai Addresses Internal Dynamics and Policy Focus

Meanwhile, Pheu Thai Party leader Julapun Amornvivat has firmly refuted claims of internal dissatisfaction among the party’s Members of Parliament regarding cabinet appointments. He articulated that the process of government formation inherently involves intricate negotiations and a careful assessment of individuals best suited to lead various ministries, emphasizing the importance of their capacity to drive and implement government policies effectively.

“The number of positions is limited, but there are many capable people,” Mr. Amornvivat stated. “Not everyone can be appointed, and everyone understands this. There is no internal conflict.” He further elaborated that individuals not selected for cabinet posts will still have opportunities to contribute through political appointments, parliamentary duties, and other avenues. Mr. Amornvivat declined to disclose the specific names of individuals nominated for ministerial roles.

Pheu Thai’s prime ministerial candidate, Yodchanan Wongsawat, expressed optimism regarding policy discussions with the BJT, indicating that the dialogues have been productive and that Pheu Thai’s proposed policies will be integrated into the government’s policy statement.

Mr. Wongsawat highlighted that Pheu Thai is expected to oversee ministries focused on social development and human capital. He acknowledged that the impact of these policies might not be immediately apparent but stressed their fundamental importance for the nation’s long-term progress and well-being.

International Relations: United States Extends Congratulations and Cooperation Pledge

In a significant development on the international front, the United States has extended its congratulations to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on his re-election. The U.S. Department of State has expressed its readiness to collaborate closely with the new Thai government. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed that the United States values its enduring alliance and friendship with Thailand and anticipates strengthening bilateral cooperation across various sectors. This diplomatic engagement underscores the continued importance of the U.S.-Thailand relationship.
