Dhaka, May 17 – On Saturday, Minister of Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology and Science Faqir Mahbub Anam committed to maintaining transparency and responsibility within the nation’s telecommunications industry, encouraging media professionals to create impartial, fact-based journalism.

“Perform your tasks in a manner that keeps us alert,” the minister stated while speaking at a roundtable session named “Future of the Telecom Sector: What the New Government Thinks,” hosted by the Telecom and Technology Reporters Network Bangladesh at InterContinental Dhaka.

He mentioned that the government is currently concentrating on 5G technology and is giving artificial intelligence (AI) significant attention. He further stated that arrangements are being made to create centers at the upazila level to educate young people in AI and freelancing.

The official also mentioned that within three months, the government launched free Wi-Fi internet services at airports, mirroring previous efforts at railway stations, as part of initiatives to enhance public service provision. “As an elected administration, we have specific responsibilities, and we are striving to carry out our strategies effectively,” he stated.

Showing confidence in the state-owned operator Teletalk, Anam mentioned that with a funding of Tk 500-600 crore, the company has the potential to overtake Grameenphone in the future. Rather than selling it, the government is looking for financial support via government-to-government (G2G) or public-private partnership (PPP) approaches.

He mentioned that efforts are being made to increase fiber and satellite connections in order to provide dependable internet services for everyone, while placing the highest importance on AI, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

The gathering, led by TRNB President Samir Kumar Dey, was overseen by its General Secretary Masuduzzaman Robin, who also gave the opening address. Sahed Alam, Head of Regulatory and Corporate Affairs at Robi, delivered the main presentation.
