Nation Honours 1971 Martyrs on 56th Independence Day
Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladesh is commemorating its 56th Independence and National Day with solemn remembrance and patriotic fervour, honouring the valiant martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War. The day’s proceedings began at dawn with the nation’s highest dignitaries paying their respects at the National Memorial in Savar.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman jointly led the tributes, arriving at the National Memorial precisely at 5:56 AM to lay wreaths at the altar. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, accompanied by his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, reached the memorial site at 5:53 AM.
Upon the President’s arrival, the Prime Minister extended a warm reception, underscoring the unity and shared purpose in commemorating this significant national milestone. Following the placement of wreaths, both leaders observed a moment of profound silence, a deeply respectful gesture acknowledging the immense sacrifices made by the freedom fighters who secured the nation’s independence.
The solemn ceremony was further enhanced by a precisely executed state salute presented by a smartly attired contingent from the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force. The poignant sound of bugles playing “The Last Post” echoed across the memorial grounds, a traditional military tribute to fallen heroes.
Several prominent government officials were present to witness and participate in the tributes. This included Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher, and State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraq Hossain. The Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani and the distinguished chiefs of the three armed services also stood in solidarity.
Subsequently, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman returned to the altar to lay an additional wreath, this time accompanied by members of his Cabinet, reinforcing the collective commitment to preserving the memory of the liberation struggle.
Beyond his official capacity, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, in his role as Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), also laid wreaths at the National Memorial. He was joined by senior party leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, highlighting the broad spectrum of political participation in honouring the nation’s heroes.
The 56th Independence and National Day serves as a crucial reminder of the sacrifices that paved the way for Bangladesh’s existence. The events of March 26, 1971, marked the formal declaration of independence, igniting a nine-month-long bloody conflict that ultimately led to the birth of a sovereign nation. The National Memorial in Savar stands as a powerful symbol of this struggle and a place of pilgrimage for citizens to reflect on the valour and determination of those who fought for freedom.
Throughout the day, various events are scheduled across the country, including parades, cultural programs, and discussions, all aimed at fostering a sense of national pride and reinforcing the ideals for which the Liberation War was fought.
