Sokoto State Government Elevates Islamic Affairs to Top Administrative Priority
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, has unequivocally declared the advancement of Islamic affairs as a paramount objective for his administration. This commitment was articulated during separate Sallah homage visits where the governor engaged with delegations from Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah, representing groups from Kaduna and Jos.
The governor’s administration is set to introduce significant governmental support for key Islamic initiatives within the state. A notable announcement was made regarding the annual Ramadan Tafseer sessions, organised by the Izala groups. Henceforth, the Sokoto State government will assume full financial responsibility for these vital religious educational programs. This decision underscores the administration’s dedication to fostering a robust Islamic environment and ensuring the continuity and quality of these important gatherings.
Governor Aliyu expressed his conviction that it is no longer appropriate for the Izala groups to undertake the annual task of raising appeal funds for the Ramadan Tafseer. To facilitate this transition, a dedicated committee will be established. This committee will be tasked with assessing the financial requirements for conducting the Tafseer sessions, paving the way for direct government intervention and support.
The governor extended his commendation to the Izala groups for their unwavering dedication to promoting Islamic ideals and Da’awah (Islamic propagation). He particularly lauded the orderly and successful execution of this year’s Ramadan Tafseer, acknowledging the significant role played by the organisation.
Emphasis on Foundational Islamic Teachings and Religious Infrastructure
Governor Aliyu issued a heartfelt appeal to Islamic preachers across Sokoto State. He urged them to intensify their focus on educating Muslims in the fundamental tenets of Islam. The objective is to equip individuals with a deeper understanding of their faith, enabling them to worship their Creator in a more profound and proper manner.
Beyond educational initiatives, the administration has pledged ongoing support for a broad spectrum of religious activities. This includes assisting Islamic organisations in the planning and participation in seminars and conferences, both domestically and internationally. Such engagements are viewed as crucial for the intellectual and spiritual growth of the Muslim community.
Furthermore, the state government has prioritised the development of essential religious infrastructure. This commitment extends to the construction and renovation of Islamiyya schools, which are vital for Islamic education at the foundational level. Equally important is the improvement of cemeteries, reflecting a holistic approach to supporting the religious and communal needs of the populace.
Recognition of Contributions and Future Collaborations
In their respective addresses, the leaders of the Izala groups from Jos and Kaduna conveyed their appreciation for the governor’s steadfast support for Islamic affairs. They highlighted the positive impact of his administration, noting the construction and renovation of numerous mosques throughout the state. This tangible development serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to religious welfare.
The leaders also lauded the support extended to key religious functionaries, including Imams, Deputy Imams, Mu’azzins, and Islamic preachers. They underscored the critical nature of this support in ensuring the effective delivery of religious services to the community.
In a separate engagement, Governor Aliyu also received members of the 23 Local Government Secretaries Forum, led by Shehu Goronyo. This meeting signifies the governor’s broader engagement with local governance structures, likely to ensure that the administration’s priorities, including those related to Islamic affairs, are effectively implemented at the grassroots level.
