Security Sweep Detains Over 1,500 Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar Ahead of National Elections

Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh – A large-scale security operation led by an army-backed joint force has resulted in the detention of at least 1,500 Rohingya individuals in the Ukhiya sub-district of Cox’s Bazar. The sweeping drive, initiated early Sunday, aimed to bolster security measures in anticipation of the upcoming 13th national parliamentary elections.

The operation specifically targeted areas outside the officially designated refugee camps, where a significant number of Rohingya refugees were reportedly residing illegally after venturing beyond camp boundaries. The focus of the drive was on Balukhali and adjacent areas within the Palongkhali union of Ukhiya. Authorities have indicated that the number of detainees could potentially rise as the operation continues.

Concerns Over Election Misuse Drive Security Measures

A senior official involved in the joint force operation revealed that the sweep was prompted by concrete intelligence regarding potential attempts to exploit the Rohingya population for political gain in the lead-up to the February 12 elections. The official highlighted that while Rohingya refugees are allocated specific camps, many have disregarded regulations by establishing settlements outside these protected zones. In some instances, these unauthorized settlements have encroached upon land owned by local residents.

“This not only constitutes a breach of the law but also presents a substantial security risk to the local populace,” the official stated.

The heightened alert among law enforcement agencies is a direct response to the potential for the large undocumented Rohingya population to be used in subversive activities, particularly during the sensitive election period. The government is committed to preventing any such exploitation and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

Screening and Verification Underway for Detained Rohingya

The detained Rohingya individuals are currently being held at a designated facility. Authorities are conducting comprehensive checks to ascertain the reasons behind their departure from the camps and the assistance they may have received. A key focus of the investigation is to determine if any political factions have attempted to engage or influence the Rohingya community in connection with the upcoming elections.

Following the initial screening and verification process, arrangements will be made to facilitate their return to the designated refugee camps. This repatriation will be managed in coordination with the local administration and relevant governmental bodies. The process is designed to ensure that all individuals are accounted for and returned to their proper accommodations, thereby maintaining order and security within and around the camps.
