A Sanctuary for Strays: Kolektif Kucing Offers Hope and Community in Malaysia

In the bustling heart of Kuala Lumpur, a special feline named Po the Dragon Warrior is finding his footing. This charming black and white kitty, whose name draws inspiration from the beloved animated character, is a testament to the power of compassion. Once a victim of abandonment and illness, Po was discovered and nursed back to health by dedicated cat rescuers, Mai and Rafiq. Today, he thrives in the welcoming environment of Kolektif Kucing, a foster home nestled in Kampung Attap, providing a vital safe haven for rescued cats awaiting their forever families.

This sanctuary is the brainchild of Wan Mohamad Hidayat and Khairina Ibrahim, a husband-and-wife duo united by their deep love for cats and a shared vision. Beyond offering shelter, Kolektif Kucing aims to cultivate a supportive “third space” for the often-overwhelmed cat rescue community.

“Burnout is a significant challenge among cat rescuers,” Khairina explained in a recent discussion, highlighting the emotional and physical toll of their work. “We aspire to address this by organising events and sessions that bring everyone together, helping us to collectively stay focused on our mission.”

From Personal Mission to Community Hub

The origins of Kolektif Kucing are rooted in the couple’s personal experiences. Khairina and Wan initially began rescuing stray cats in the vicinity of their condominium. However, the demanding nature of rescue work eventually led them to take a temporary hiatus due to burnout. Coincidentally, during this period, they encountered Professor, a senior stray cat who frequented their favourite nasi lemak stall.

Recognising Professor’s vulnerability and inability to survive independently, the couple faced a crucial decision. “We knew we had to save her,” Khairina recounted. “We could either spend money boarding her elsewhere, or we could leverage those resources to create something that would benefit both Professor and other cat rescuers.” This contemplation ultimately led to the establishment of Kolektif Kucing. As Khairina succinctly put it, “The simple answer is that we love cats a lot!”

Driven by this passion, the couple launched the pilot foster home of Kolektif Kucing in Wangsa Maju around June of the previous year. Five months later, a growing demand prompted the opening of a second, larger foster home in Kampung Attap, further expanding their capacity to help.

A Haven of Care and Connection

The Kampung Attap centre is currently operating at full capacity, providing a nurturing environment for Po the Dragon Warrior and nine other felines. An additional six cats are being cared for at the Wangsa Maju location. Since its inception, Khairina estimates that Kolektif Kucing has fostered approximately 30 to 40 cats, with a heartwarming 15 of them successfully finding their adoptive homes.

Every cat that enters the Kolektif Kucing fold undergoes a thorough series of health checks. This meticulous process ensures that all residents are free from diseases and pose no risk to their fellow feline boarders, creating a safe and healthy environment for all. The living spaces within the foster homes are thoughtfully designed to foster interaction between humans and cats. Unlike traditional shelters, the cats are not confined to cages. Instead, they are free to roam, play, and relax in sun-drenched corners, embodying a sense of comfort and freedom.

Essential cat-care provisions, including food bowls and water fountains, are readily available. The walls are adorned with charming feline-themed artwork, adding a touch of whimsy and delight for visitors. Kolektif Kucing also fosters strong collaborations with a network of 15 local cat rescuers. These partnerships are instrumental in bringing new cats into the foster program, ensuring a continuous flow of aid to animals in need.

Building a Stronger Rescue Community

Among the dedicated rescuers collaborating with Kolektif Kucing is Kya Cahaya. Her journey into rescue work began after the profound loss of her beloved cat, Peanut, to heart failure. Overwhelmed by grief, Kya found solace and purpose in helping other cats, a sentiment that led her to discover Kolektif Kucing through social media. One of her rescued cats, Mawar, is now a resident at the Wangsa Maju foster home.

“The cat rescue community is incredibly strong and supportive,” Kya shared. “We genuinely look out for each other. As I’m relatively new to this, I deeply appreciate the support I receive from them. Rescuing can sometimes feel isolating, and the sense of community fostered by Kolektif Kucing is invaluable.”

Looking ahead, the couple harbours ambitious plans for expansion. They envision 2026 as a “year of growth,” with aspirations to establish more foster homes. Simultaneously, they are committed to refining their existing standard operating procedures to maximise their capacity to assist as many cats as possible.

“There’s an inherent fulfillment in this work,” Khairina reflected. “And the opportunity to collaborate with cat rescuers – these hardworking individuals who dedicate their time and effort to helping these animals – is incredibly rewarding.” The joy of seeing a cat find a loving home never diminishes. “Adopting out a cat is always a cause for immense happiness. In the early days, I would become very attached, and it was difficult to say goodbye. But I’m profoundly glad when they move on to a brighter future.”
