Legal Action Planned in Lahore Following Tragic Child’s Death from Dog Bite
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Lahore has announced its intention to pursue legal action in the Lahore High Court (LHC) following the tragic death of an eight-year-old girl, Mehr, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a dog bite. Faisal Mir, President of PPP Lahore, revealed the party’s commitment to seeking justice for the victim and her bereaved family.
Speaking to the media alongside Mehr’s father, Sabir Masih, Mir stated that the PPP Lahore, in a joint effort with the grieving family, will be filing a writ petition. The petition will be directed against the Lahore Municipal Corporation and various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) deemed relevant to the case.
Mir emphasized that the responsibility for controlling and vaccinating stray dog populations lies directly with municipal authorities. He asserted that the tragic demise of the child is a direct consequence of the negligence of these concerned institutions. “This is a clear case of negligence, and those responsible must be held accountable,” Mir declared, underscoring the party’s resolve to ensure accountability.
Beyond accountability, the PPP plans to seek compensation, known as ‘diyat,’ for the affected family through the court proceedings. This aims to provide the family with necessary financial relief during their time of profound loss and to acknowledge the grave injustice they have suffered.
The legal challenge will also encompass NGOs operating under the guise of animal welfare and those managing dog shelters. Mir alleged that some of these organisations collect funds ostensibly for animal rights but fail to implement effective measures to control the burgeoning stray dog population. “Such entities will also be brought before the law,” he added, indicating a broad scope for the legal action.
To spearhead this crucial legal battle, Town President Afraz Naqvi and Zonal President Waheed Lodhi have been assigned the responsibility of actively pursuing the case. The PPP has pledged its unwavering support, both legally and morally, to the grieving family throughout every phase of the legal proceedings.
This decisive move by the PPP reflects a broader societal concern that has been escalating in Lahore regarding the increasing number of stray dog attacks. The incident has amplified public calls for more stringent and effective enforcement of animal control measures by civic bodies. The party’s intervention aims to address this systemic issue and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
The legal petition is expected to scrutinize the existing protocols for animal management within the city, the efficacy of vaccination programs, and the accountability of both governmental bodies and private organizations involved in animal welfare. The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for public safety and the regulation of stray animal populations in urban environments.
The family, devastated by their loss, has found a strong advocate in the PPP, which has committed to ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected in the pursuit of justice. The legal proceedings are anticipated to highlight the critical need for comprehensive and proactive strategies to manage the stray dog issue, ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
