A Final Column: Reflections on a Journey and a Vision for Nigeria

As I sit down to write what is likely my last column, I am filled with a mix of emotions. Over the years, I have often requested to step back from writing, whether temporarily or permanently, and I have always done so without hesitation. I believe that newspapers generally respect the personal opinions and political leanings of their columnists, allowing them the freedom to express themselves without interference.

Now, as I approach the end of my column-writing journey, I feel compelled to express my gratitude. I thank the management and owners of the newspapers that gave me the opportunity to share my thoughts with readers. I also appreciate those who read my work, even if they did not agree with me, and those who flipped through my writings in search of something meaningful.

I am especially grateful to the critics who understood me well enough to engage with my opinions. They have played a crucial role in shaping my perspective and helping me grow as a writer and thinker.

The People’s Redemption Party: A Legacy of Strength

Three days ago, the political party I belong to held its Convention, primarily to elect new leadership. I was elected as the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), a position that comes with great responsibility. Our party has stood strong through the most challenging times in our democratic experiment, supported by Nigerians who believe in our cause.

The PRP, over 70 years old, is the longest surviving political party in Nigeria. Its core ideology remains unchanged: the emancipation of the poor from the greed and impunity of the powerful. Unlike other parties driven by stolen wealth or the desire for office, the PRP has always been rooted in principles and values.

A Legacy of Courage and Principles

One of the founding fathers of the PRP, Malam Aminu Kano, was a brilliant and courageous figure. He and his colleagues challenged a conservative political elite, armed only with their principles and the courage to change systems that kept the poor and powerless in a state of perpetual subjugation. The PRP has always maintained a clear ideology and set of principles, which none of the current Nigerian state political parties can match.

Our party is radical in its approach, steadfast in defending its identity, and unapologetic about being the voice of the poor. While younger Nigerians may be drawn to big-man politics, our members, deeply familiar with our history and ideology, wear our legacy with pride.

A Party for All Nigerians

What makes the PRP unique is its large proportion of young members. We do not use our youth to break heads or rig elections. Instead, we give them opportunities to stand for elective offices and serve as shining examples of good character and faith in real change. Although founded by Northerners, the PRP is not a Northern party. Our recent convention saw delegates from various states across Nigeria, including Rivers, Plateau, Lagos, Adamawa, Kebbi, and Borno. This diversity reflects our commitment to being a national party.

A Nation in Crisis

Our convention took place just one day after an event that was deeply offensive to every value we hold dear as Nigerians and Africans. The APC, a party that once promised to combat corruption and promote good governance, held its convention on public property, reminding Nigerians of everything wrong with our democracy. While citizens braved barricades and tear gas, the President and his wife, along with 32 governors and countless officials, sat comfortably, seemingly certain of their victory in the 2027 elections.

Many Nigerians are questioning whether the state of insecurity matters to those who believe they will win another term. Did these leaders discuss the lack of electricity, the daily bloodshed by criminals, the rising cost of living, the deepening divisions in society, the loss of faith in free and fair elections, the alienation of the youth, the misuse of public resources, and the rise of authoritarian rule?

A Vision for Change

We wait to see what the leading opposition party will do differently, but the PRP has a clear vision. Nigeria is at risk of being destroyed by a clique that sets us against each other while they enjoy luxury without regard for consequences. We believe this can change. We will work to restore the essence of democracy, where people, not politicians, have power; where leaders are honest and accountable; and where citizens choose leaders through free and fair elections.

We envision a Nigeria where the youth have a secure future, where crime and violence are punished, where corruption is treated as an attack on our values, where institutions function as intended, and where religion is a force for justice and freedom. We aim to build a nation of equals, where faith or ethnic identity is not a liability, and where basic infrastructure is a right, not a political commodity.

A Call to Action

The PRP does not believe it can achieve this alone. We are seeking honest Nigerians committed to changing our dangerous trajectory to participate in the electoral process. We will collaborate with individuals, groups, and parties to build momentum that defeats politicians who exploit our wealth for their gain.

We know this will not be easy. We have seen how vital institutions central to democracy have been used against opponents. This is the time for all Nigerians alarmed by our decline to step up. Please join us. Nigeria can be fixed. It must be fixed. 2027 must be the year we say “No” to weak and corrupt leaders. Let them all join the ruling party. It makes it easy to remove them.
