Governors Forum Submits State Police Proposal to National Security Adviser

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has formally submitted its proposed framework for the establishment of state police to the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. This significant contribution is poised to inform legislative discussions as the document is expected to be transmitted to the National Assembly for further consideration.

The announcement was made by the NGF Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at his residence in Ikoyi, Lagos. Governor AbdulRazaq confirmed that deliberations concerning state police are actively underway among various security agencies, under the leadership of the National Security Adviser.

“On the issue of state police, discussions are ongoing amongst various security organisations, led by the National Security Advisor, and the NGF has made its contribution,” stated Governor AbdulRazaq. “That document will be taken to the National Assembly to see how we can have a legislative framework for state police.”

This move by the NGF underscores a commitment to exploring avenues that could potentially enhance Nigeria’s security architecture. The concept of state police has been a focal point of national discourse, with varying perspectives on its potential benefits and drawbacks. Proponents argue that decentralized policing would enable a more responsive and community-oriented approach to law enforcement, addressing local security challenges more effectively. Conversely, concerns have been raised regarding the potential for misuse of such powers by state governors.

Renewed Commitment to National Security and Development

Beyond the state police initiative, Governor AbdulRazaq reaffirmed the collective commitment of the nation’s governors to strengthening their collaboration with existing security forces. This renewed partnership aims to achieve several key objectives:

  • Combating Terrorism: A steadfast effort to steadily defeat terrorism across the country.
  • Infrastructure Development: Expanding opportunities for infrastructure projects that will benefit the nation.
  • Improving Citizens’ Lives: Enhancing the overall quality of life for all Nigerians.

“As governors, we commit to renew our collaboration with security forces to defeat terrorism steadily, expand infrastructure opportunities and improve the lives of our people,” Governor AbdulRazaq affirmed.

Praising President Tinubu’s UK State Visit

The NGF Chairman also took the opportunity to congratulate President Bola Tinubu on the successful state visit to the United Kingdom. He described the visit as “bold and significant,” highlighting the positive outcomes and investment proposals that emerged from the trip.

“We congratulate you on the successful state visit to the United Kingdom and the many successes and investment proposals achieved during the trip,” Governor AbdulRazaq conveyed. “While our nation has always enjoyed a good relationship with the United Kingdom, the state visit, the first in 37 years, is bold and significant. It speaks to new leadership in Nigeria.”

The governor expressed strong confidence that the bilateral agreements forged and the fresh approach adopted on matters of mutual interest with the UK will serve to deepen the existing relationship and usher in greater prosperity for Nigerians.

“We are confident that the bilateral agreements presently signed and the new approach on issues of shared interest will strengthen the existing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom and will bring more prosperity to our people,” he added.

The “Renewed Hope” Agenda and National Unity

Governor AbdulRazaq also commended President Tinubu for his dedicated pursuit of the “Renewed Hope” agenda, stating that it has instilled a sense of pride among Nigerians. He emphasized that the current administration’s efforts have fostered a greater sense of ownership in nation-building among citizens, which he believes will translate into improved security nationwide.

“Your Excellency, we thank you for prosecuting the Renewed Hope agenda in a way that has made Nigerians proud more than ever before,” he said. “Every Nigerian now has a stake in nation-building. We believe that this will translate to improved security in every part of our country.”

He underscored the critical importance of collective effort in addressing and eradicating security breaches throughout the country. “Together, we must see that breaches of security all over the country come to an end,” he urged.

Call for National Virtues

In his address, the NGF chairman appealed to all Nigerians, particularly leaders, to embrace and uphold virtues such as piety, selflessness, compassion, unity, and mutual understanding. He posited that the cultivation of these qualities is fundamental to achieving collective security, happiness, and prosperity for the nation.

The meeting, which was attended by approximately 25 governors despite being called on short notice, was seen as a testament to the respect they hold for President Tinubu and his leadership.

“As you can see here today, we have about 25 governors who attend at short notice; it’s a respect we have for you and the leadership you’re providing for the nation,” Governor AbdulRazaq noted.

Notable attendees at the meeting included Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and other high-ranking government officials.

The establishment of state police, as previously mentioned, involves ongoing efforts, with the new Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, having formed a committee in February to outline the necessary modalities for its implementation.
