Kiambu County Unveils Ambitious Healthcare Expansion: 32 New Hospitals to Boost Access and Capacity
Kiambu County is embarking on a transformative healthcare initiative with the equipping and operationalisation of 32 newly constructed hospitals. This significant development is poised to alleviate congestion in existing medical facilities, expand bed capacity by an impressive 1,600 beds, and elevate the standard of healthcare services available to residents. The project, spearheaded by Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration through the Department of Health Services, has reached a crucial stage with tenders for essential equipment procurement and installation already advertised.
The county government’s strategic approach focuses on a comprehensive equipping process. Instead of a piecemeal installation, the administration opted for a holistic approach, ensuring that once operational, these new facilities can immediately commence patient care. Tendering for this extensive procurement began in January, and officials anticipate that within the next two to three months, these hospitals will be ready to welcome and treat patients.
A Multi-Tiered Approach to Healthcare Infrastructure
The ambitious plan encompasses a mix of Level Four and Level Three facilities, strategically distributed across the county to enhance accessibility in line with the World Health Organisation’s recommendation that no citizen should travel more than five kilometres for healthcare.
Level Four Hospitals: Six comprehensive Level Four facilities have been constructed over the past three years. These state-of-the-art medical hubs are designed to offer a wide spectrum of services.
- Locations: Thogoto (Kikuyu), Rukuma (Lari), Bibirioni (Limuru), Karuri (Kiambu Sub-County), and Gachororo (Juja).
- Capacity: Each facility boasts a substantial 180-bed capacity.
- Services: These hospitals are envisioned as integrated medical centres, featuring outpatient and inpatient departments, advanced radiology services, dedicated maternity units, two surgical theatres, and distinct wards for male, female, and pediatric patients.
- Investment: The construction cost for each of these advanced Level Four facilities is approximately Sh210 million.
Level Three Hospitals: Complementing the larger facilities are 26 newly built Level Three hospitals, designed to provide essential primary and secondary healthcare services.
- Cost: The investment per Level Three facility ranges from Sh50 million to Sh80 million, depending on the specific scope of work and services offered.
- Features: These hospitals are equipped with similar essential components, including outpatient and inpatient wings. They also feature dedicated maternity units with 26 beds, a 10-bed general ward, a six-bed general ward, well-equipped laboratories, and a theatre for minor surgical procedures.
Addressing Past Challenges: Modernisation and Investment
This significant expansion marks a departure from the challenges that have plagued Kiambu County’s public healthcare system for over a decade since the advent of devolution. For years, residents have contended with dilapidated infrastructure and outdated medical equipment, often leading to breakdowns and forcing patients to seek vital services at more expensive private facilities. This situation also unfortunately created vulnerabilities for patients, with instances of alleged collusion between some medical professionals and private clinics to pressure patients into undergoing unnecessary or overpriced tests.
To combat these issues and ensure equitable access to quality care, the county government has made a substantial investment of over Sh500 million in medical equipment. This includes state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and treatment apparatus destined for both the new hospitals and existing facilities.
- Key Equipment Procured:
- Ultrasound machines
- X-ray machines (including advanced digital models)
- Dialysis machines
- Endoscopy machines
Dr. Patrick Nyagah, Chief Officer for Health Services, highlighted the impact of these procurements. “By this, we (Kiambu) will be the first county to have more than 14 X-ray machines in the same territory. And they are all brand new,” he stated. Advanced digital X-ray machines have already been installed in several key hospitals, including Gatundu, Thika, Kiambu, Lusigetti, Lari, Ruiru, Nyathuna, Karuri, Tigoni, Kihara, Igegania, Wangige, and Kigumo. Dialysis machines have also been allocated to Thika and Gatundu hospitals.
Furthermore, the county has actively pursued the upgrading of existing healthcare infrastructure. 28 dispensaries have undergone renovation and have been elevated to Level Three facilities, expanding the network of accessible healthcare points. The Wangige Level Four Hospital, completed some time ago, is also currently undergoing the process of being equipped, further enhancing its service delivery capabilities.
The comprehensive rollout of these new hospitals and the substantial investment in modern medical equipment signal a renewed commitment by the Kiambu County Government to providing accessible, high-quality, and efficient healthcare services to all its residents. This initiative is expected to significantly improve health outcomes and reduce the burden on both patients and the existing healthcare infrastructure.
