The Rise of Beauty Treatments Amid Economic Challenges
Despite the current financial pressures affecting many households, Britons are still investing heavily in beauty treatments. This trend has led to a significant increase in spending on aesthetic procedures, with an estimated £3 billion being spent annually to maintain appearances.
The demand for Botox has seen a notable rise, as an aging population seeks to preserve their youthful looks. This is particularly evident in the UK, where non-invasive treatments such as Botox have become increasingly popular. According to recent figures, the UK spends approximately £3.2 billion each year on these types of procedures.
The growth in this sector is not limited to the UK. Pharmaceutical companies like Galderma, a Swiss dermatology giant, have reported substantial sales increases. In the first quarter of this year, Galderma saw a 25% sales growth, reaching $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion). The company noted that Britons have paid for 900,000 Botox treatments in the past year alone.
Globally, the aesthetics market is valued at around £31 billion, with injectables accounting for 65% of the UK’s market. This boom is partly driven by the increasing use of weight-loss jabs, which can lead to sagging facial skin. Despite rising costs, consumers are not cutting back on these treatments.
The ‘Lipstick Effect’ and Consumer Behavior
Galderma’s CEO, Flemming Ornskov, highlighted that customers are not avoiding beauty treatments even during times of economic hardship. He referred to this phenomenon as the ‘lipstick effect,’ an economic theory suggesting that during tough financial times, people tend to spend on affordable luxuries to improve their mood.
Ornskov emphasized that while consumers are aware of rising gasoline prices, they are not skipping their beauty injections. He stated, “Are they immune to gasoline prices going up? No. Do they drop an injection because gasoline prices are going up? No.”
This behavior reflects a broader trend where individuals prioritize self-care and appearance, even when budgets are tight.
New Trends in Aesthetic Treatments
A new procedure has gained attention in Hollywood, as celebrities focus on maintaining their youthful appearance. The knees have become a new target for aesthetic treatments, with stars looking to prevent signs of aging before stepping onto the red carpet.
Aesthetic nurse Karen Villanueva, who works with celebrity plastic surgeon Dr Marc Mani, explained that the knees are now a significant concern. She said, “The best facelift in the world won’t help you if your knees show signs of ageing. Knees have become a big deal.”
Villanueva uses an FDA-approved treatment called Sofwave, which employs ultrasound energy to heat the dermis—the middle layer of skin where collagen and elastin fibers are produced. This treatment takes about 15 minutes and costs $1,500 (£1,125) per session. It is recommended to have three appointments spaced three months apart to achieve the desired results of lifting and smoothing saggy knee skin.
