Violent Confrontation Erupts Outside Alice Springs Hospital, Multiple Arrests Made
Alice Springs, NT – A tense situation unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning outside Alice Springs Hospital, culminating in the arrest of two men and three boys by Northern Territory Police. Authorities allege the group was involved in an aggravated assault and was seen brandishing bladed weapons, including machetes.
Police were called to the hospital precinct on multiple occasions throughout Sunday. The initial response came just before 5 am following reports of a brawl outside the facility. Witnesses described one individual wielding a machete. However, by the time officers arrived, the group had already dispersed.
The situation escalated approximately an hour later when police received further distressing reports. A 19-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted outside the hospital and subsequently chased inside by individuals armed with machetes. The woman and a number of her companions managed to find safety within a security office, where staff promptly secured the door.
According to a statement released by NT Police, it is alleged that the assailants then displayed the machetes in the hospital’s public waiting area before making their escape. Their getaway vehicle was identified as a white Holden Commodore.
A Desperate Pursuit and Swift Apprehension
The white Commodore was later spotted and a pursuit was initiated, heading north of Alice Springs. However, the pursuit was ultimately terminated by police due to safety concerns for both officers and the public.
Earlier in the morning, police had already been alerted to the presence of the same white Holden Commodore sedan circulating within the Alice Springs Central Business District. On these earlier occasions, occupants of the vehicle were reportedly seen armed with machetes.
The vehicle’s erratic movements eventually led to its discovery. At approximately 9:15 am, a police dog successfully tracked the Holden Commodore to bushland located north of the town.
Charges Pending for Five Individuals
Following the discovery of the vehicle, five males, whose ages range from 14 to 19 years old, were apprehended by police. As of Sunday afternoon, all five individuals remained in custody and were awaiting formal charges. The nature of the alleged offences points to a serious incident that caused significant alarm and disruption within the community and at a critical public service facility. Police investigations are ongoing.
