Padma River Tragedy: Recovery Efforts Intensify After Bus Plunge, Compensation Announced

Rajbari, Bangladesh – The grim task of recovering bodies from the Padma River continues following the catastrophic sinking of the Souhardo Transport bus at the Daulatdia Ferry Ghat in Goalanda, Rajbari. As of Thursday evening, a total of 26 bodies have been retrieved from the treacherous waters. Recovery operations were temporarily suspended as darkness fell but are expected to resume with renewed urgency.

The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the region, has prompted immediate action from local authorities. In a gesture of solidarity and support for the grieving families, the District Commissioner’s Office has confirmed that each bereaved family will receive BDT 25,000 in compensation. This financial assistance was confirmed by Md. Hafizur Rahman, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate.

In response to the devastating accident, an official investigation committee was established on Wednesday midnight by Additional District Magistrate Uchen Me. This five-member committee is tasked with thoroughly examining the circumstances leading to the bus’s plunge into the river and will comprise:

  • Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime & OPS) Md. Shamsul Haque
  • Assistant General Manager of BIWTC Daulatdia Office Md. Salah Uddin
  • Deputy Assistant Director of Rajbari Fire Service and Civil Defence Dewan Sohel Rana
  • Goalanda Upazila Executive Officer Sathi Das

The committee is expected to conduct a detailed inquiry, interview witnesses, and analyze all available evidence to determine the cause of the tragedy.

Furthermore, they pledged to implement measures aimed at repairing the currently dilapidated state of the ferry ghat, recognizing its critical role in local transportation and the potential safety implications of its poor condition.
