Morocco’s Transport Sector Seeks Relief Amidst Soaring Fuel Costs
Morocco’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics has been inundated with applications for exceptional financial support, receiving a staggering 64,961 submissions from road transport professionals. This surge in demand is a direct response to escalating fuel prices on international markets, a situation exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical tensions. The government’s initiative aims to safeguard citizens’ purchasing power and provide a vital lifeline to transport operators grappling with these economic pressures.
The implementation of a dedicated digital platform has facilitated the application process, allowing professionals to register their need for assistance. The platform’s launch has been met with overwhelming response, with a significant portion of applications, over 30,000, being filed in just the last two days, underscoring the acute pressure currently being felt across the sector.
Breakdown of Support Applications
The applications received represent a diverse cross-section of the road transport industry. Key sectors seeking support include:
- Taxi Drivers: This group accounts for the largest share of requests, with a substantial 44,101 applications submitted as of Wednesday morning. This figure represents more than half of the total applications received, highlighting the significant impact of fuel price hikes on individual taxi operators.
- Road Freight Operators: Ranking second in terms of demand, professionals in the road freight sector have submitted 18,875 applications. This indicates the critical role of logistics and the challenges faced in maintaining operational costs for goods transportation.
- Other Transport Services: The remaining applications come from a variety of other essential transport services. These include:
- Road assistance services
- Employee transport
- Intercity public transport
- School transport
- Rural transport
- Tourist transport
Authorities anticipate that the volume of applications will continue to climb in the coming days as more professionals become aware of the support scheme and navigate the registration process.
Government’s Response and Support Mechanism
The Ministry of Transport and Logistics, under the leadership of Abdessamad Kayouh, has taken proactive steps to ensure efficient processing and distribution of the financial aid. Regional branches of the ministry have been directed to establish dedicated reception centers to provide in-person assistance to transport professionals who may require help with their applications. Furthermore, a central support unit has been established to cater to individuals who encountered difficulties registering through the online platform.
Transport professionals have had the ability to submit and monitor their applications electronically since March 20th. The ministry has assured that the subsidy distribution will follow a well-established mechanism, mirroring the procedures used in previous support operations, to guarantee efficiency and timely disbursement of funds.
This latest round of exceptional support, launched earlier this week, is a reiteration of a similar program introduced in March 2022. That initiative was designed to mitigate the adverse effects of rising fuel costs on the transport sector, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing recurring challenges within this vital industry. The current program aims to provide similar relief, acknowledging the persistent economic headwinds faced by Moroccan transport professionals.
