National Police Agency Unveils Ambitious AI Integration for Enhanced Public Safety and Citizen Services
The National Police Agency is poised to revolutionize public service delivery and operational efficiency through a comprehensive integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. In a significant shift from traditional, in-person administrative processes, citizens will soon be able to resolve a multitude of police-related civil complaints remotely, leveraging an innovative AI chatbot. This initiative aims to streamline access to essential documents and information, significantly reducing the need for physical visits to police stations.
Transforming Administrative Processes with AI Chatbot
Starting next year, the AI chatbot, aptly named ‘모두의 경찰관’ (Everyone’s Police Officer), is expected to handle a substantial volume of administrative tasks. Functioning much like the established Government24 app, which facilitates requests for resident registration copies, ‘모두의 경찰관’ will serve as a central hub for citizens to submit civil complaints. The AI will then process these requests and deliver the results directly to the user.
The National Police Agency anticipates that this AI-driven system will automate the processing of over 300 million cases annually, encompassing 102 distinct types of straightforward police-related administrative procedures. This strategic implementation of “public safety AI” is designed to alleviate the administrative burden on police personnel, allowing them to focus on more critical duties. Furthermore, by training the AI on extensive historical data from various incidents and accidents, the agency aims to enhance the support provided to officers in the field.
To underscore this commitment to AI innovation, the police have launched a “Comprehensive Plan for Public Safety AI Innovation” and have elevated their AI organizational structure from a section level to a department level, signaling a significant investment in this technological frontier.
AI-Powered Field Operations and Investigations
Beyond administrative services, AI is set to play a crucial role in enhancing frontline policing and critical investigations, including missing person searches. Beginning next month, a pilot program will deploy patrol cars equipped with advanced AI cameras and drones in the southwestern Seoul districts of Gangseo, Yangcheon, Yeongdeungpo, Guro, and Geumcheon.
These patrol vehicles will feature three AI cameras designed to analyze real-time video feeds. The system’s capability extends to automatically detecting individuals in crowds who may be carrying weapons or identifying signs of fire, such as smoke. This proactive surveillance aims to improve response times and enhance situational awareness for officers.
Revolutionizing Emergency Response with Next-Generation 112 System
A particularly groundbreaking application of AI will be seen in the development of a “next-generation 112 emergency reporting system.” This advanced system will leverage AI to:
- Automate Transcription: The AI will automatically transcribe the content of all 112 emergency calls.
- Analyze Urgency: It will analyze ambient noise and vocal inflections to gauge the urgency of the situation.
- Assess Risk Levels: Based on the caller’s personal information and the nature of the report, the AI will assess the risk level at the scene.
This intelligent system will provide crucial real-time intelligence to responding officers. For instance, in the event of a domestic violence report, the AI will cross-reference the resident’s criminal record. If the individual is found to have a history of violent crimes, the AI will proactively alert responding officers, advising them to equip themselves with protective gear, such as bulletproof vests, before arrival. This proactive risk assessment is expected to significantly improve officer safety and the effectiveness of emergency responses.
