Egypt Affirms Unwavering Solidarity with Lebanon Amidst Regional Tensions
Cairo, Egypt – In a significant display of regional solidarity, the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, met with President Joseph Aoun, conveying a powerful message of support from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The communication underscored Egypt’s “full solidarity of Egypt and its leadership, government and people with Lebanon in these difficult circumstances.” This assurance comes at a critical juncture, as Lebanon navigates a complex and volatile regional landscape.
Minister Abdelatty’s visit highlighted Egypt’s firm stance against escalating hostilities and reaffirmed its commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability. He unequivocally condemned “the daily Israeli violations that infringe upon Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Furthermore, he stressed the paramount importance of adhering to international mandates, specifically emphasizing “the importance of implementing U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and the complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory.” This call for compliance with international law and resolutions signals Egypt’s dedication to a peaceful and just resolution of regional disputes.
Beyond diplomatic pronouncements, Egypt has demonstrated its commitment through tangible actions. Minister Abdelatty announced Egypt’s “readiness to meet all of Lebanon’s needs,” a pledge backed by the immediate delivery of vital aid. “We have brought with us a shipment of humanitarian, medical, and food aid to support the Lebanese people, especially the displaced,” he stated, directly addressing the pressing needs of those affected by the ongoing crisis.
The internal displacement crisis in Lebanon was identified as a significant concern during the discussions. However, Abdelatty expressed a strong sense of optimism regarding the resilience of the Lebanese people. He noted, “the internal displacement crisis is a major concern, but we are confident in the cohesion of the Lebanese people and in maintaining civil peace in the face of challenges.” This sentiment reflects Egypt’s belief in the inherent strength and unity of the Lebanese society.
Egypt’s engagement extends beyond humanitarian assistance, encompassing robust political and diplomatic support. Minister Abdelatty revealed that he conveyed “Egypt’s full political and diplomatic support for Lebanon.” He elaborated on Cairo’s active role in de-escalation efforts, stating, “Cairo is making intensive efforts with various regional and international parties, including the United States and France, to reduce the escalation and stop the attacks.” This multi-faceted diplomatic approach underscores Egypt’s determination to foster regional stability.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister reiterated his country’s strong opposition to any military incursions that violate international norms. He emphasized “complete rejection of the ground incursion and Israeli violations that contravene international law,” and issued a clear call for “their immediate cessation.” This firm stance reinforces Egypt’s commitment to upholding international legal frameworks and preventing further humanitarian suffering.
Continuing its proactive engagement, Egypt remains in constant dialogue with all relevant parties. The objective, as highlighted by Abdelatty, is to secure a ceasefire and avert a broader regional conflict. “Egypt continues its contacts with all parties, within the framework of seeking a ceasefire and preventing the region from sliding into widespread chaos,” he affirmed.
A crucial element of Egypt’s strategy involves bolstering Lebanon’s internal capacity to manage its affairs. The Minister underscored “the need to support the Lebanese state and its institutions, foremost among them the Lebanese army, to impose state sovereignty and confine weapons to its hands.” This emphasis on strengthening state institutions is seen as vital for Lebanon’s long-term stability and its ability to assert control over its territory and security.
The comprehensive support offered by Egypt, encompassing humanitarian aid, political backing, and diplomatic initiatives, signals a deep-seated commitment to Lebanon’s well-being and its rightful place within a stable region. This proactive engagement serves as a testament to Egypt’s leadership role in promoting peace and security in the Middle East.
