Samsung Claims Top Spot in KBO Standings

Samsung made a significant move in the KBO standings, overtaking LG after a strong performance in their recent home game. The victory on July 7 marked Samsung’s fifth consecutive win, propelling them to 50 wins (31 losses, 2 draws) with a winning percentage of 0.617. This edged out LG, which has 51 wins and 32 losses with a slightly lower winning percentage of 0.614. Notably, this shift occurred without any games-back difference, highlighting the tight race between the two teams.

The game was a back-and-forth battle. Samsung trailed 0-2 in the fifth inning but staged a remarkable comeback. They scored four runs through four hits, a hit-by-pitch, and an opponent’s infield error. Fourth batter Choi Hyoung-woo played a pivotal role, driving in one run each in the fifth and seventh innings. His performance brought his career RBIs in the KBO League to 1,800, surpassing SSG’s Choi Jeong by 122 units. In the eighth inning, Lewin Diaz sealed the victory with a two-run homer, his 16th of the season, making the score 7-2.

Starting pitcher Ariel Jurado delivered a solid performance, allowing only two runs over six innings. He struck out four batters and walked four while giving up five hits. Jurado secured his fifth win of the season (5-1), supported by the offensive efforts of his teammates.

On the other side, LG struggled to respond after Park Dong-won’s leadoff two-run homer in the fourth inning. Starter Anders Tolhurst, who had previously won all three of his starts against Samsung this season with a 0.50 ERA, allowed four runs in five innings. This loss marked his fourth defeat in his last five starts, raising concerns about his consistency.

SSG Ends Losing Streak with Victory Over Doosan

SSG managed to break a nine-game losing streak by defeating Doosan 4-2 in Jamsil. This win came after a challenging stretch where they lost 13 consecutive games from May 17 against LG to June 2 against Kiwoom. The team avoided another double-digit losing streak, showing signs of improvement.

Rookie pitcher Kim Min-jun made a standout debut, pitching six hitless innings. He allowed four hits, one walk, and struck out six batters for his second win (1-1). Kim, a graduate of Daegu High School, became the sixth high school rookie in club history to achieve a quality start in his debut season. His performance was supported by the offense, including Guillermo Heredia’s two-run double in the sixth inning and Choi Jeong’s two-run homer in the eighth.

Lotte Dominates KIA in Sajik

Lotte put on a strong display at home in Sajik, defeating KIA 10-2. Starter Elvin Rodríguez pitched seven innings, striking out nine batters without allowing any runs. He gave up three hits and one walk, earning his fifth win (5-5). The offense was equally impressive, recording a season-high 18 hits. Víctor Reyes went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while Son Seong-bin added 3-for-4 with two RBIs. KIA suffered its third consecutive loss, continuing a tough stretch for the team.

KT Edges Out Kiwoom in Suwon

In Suwon, KT defeated Kiwoom 3-0 in a tightly contested game. KT’s So Hyeong-jun pitched seven innings, allowing no runs and striking out five batters. He outperformed Kiwoom’s An Woo-jin, who gave up three runs in six innings. So Hyeong-jun secured his fourth win of the season (4-0), showcasing his dominance on the mound.

NC Breaks Three-Game Skid with Win Over Hanwha
