Kudrow recalled the incident vividly, explaining that it happened at the height of Friends‘ popularity. She was heading to a place like Jerry’s Deli when a hostess, who she noted had an Eastern European accent, approached her with a hushed tone.
“I know who you are,” the hostess whispered.
Kudrow, accustomed to fan recognition, responded with a simple, “Aw, yeah.”
But the hostess’s next words were far from expected. “You are Dionne Warwick,” she declared.
The actress was taken aback. “I just went, ‘No, I’m not. I am not.’”
Surrounded by her surprised fellow panellists – Ashley Padilla, Quinta Brunson, Rachel Sennott, Hannah Einbinder, and Keke Palmer – Kudrow elaborated on her reaction. She initially felt a flicker of disbelief from the hostess, as if she couldn’t comprehend that Kudrow didn’t know who she was. Then, the name itself registered: Dionne Warwick.
“I said, ‘She’s a legendary singer!’” Kudrow exclaimed, finding the entire situation hilariously absurd. “I just thought it was the funniest thing ever.”

In addition to her reflections on industry perception, Kudrow also opened up in April about the “intense” scrutiny faced by the female cast members of Friends from the show’s predominantly male writers’ room. She described instances of “mean stuff going on behind the scenes.”
Recounting these experiences to The Times, Kudrow explained the pressure of performing in front of a live audience of 400 people. If a line was flubbed or a joke didn’t land perfectly, the writers could react harshly. She recalled hearing comments like, “Can’t the bitch fing read? She’s not even trying. She fed up my line.” These comments underscored the difficult environment that the actresses sometimes had to navigate while delivering their iconic performances.
