Arteta Laments Missed Penalty Call in Champions League Final Heartbreak

Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, has expressed his belief that his side were “easily” denied a penalty in the dying stages of their dramatic Champions League final showdown against Paris Saint-Germain. The Gunners ultimately fell to PSG in a gruelling penalty shootout, a result that has left a bitter taste in the mouths of the North London club and their passionate fanbase.

The pivotal moment in question occurred in the 103rd minute of extra time, with the scores locked at 1-1. Arsenal winger Noni Madueke went down inside the PSG penalty area following a challenge from Nuno Mendes. Madueke vehemently appealed for a spot-kick, but referee Daniel Siebert waved away his protests. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system upheld the on-field decision, and crucially, did not deem the incident significant enough to warrant a pitchside review by the referee.

This controversial call stands in stark contrast to an earlier penalty awarded to PSG. In the first half, Cristhian Mosquera was penalised for a challenge on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia within the Arsenal box. This decision, described by Arteta as “relatively uncontroversial,” was converted by Ousmane Dembele, levelling the score and setting the stage for the nail-biting conclusion.

The match ultimately went the distance, with the tension palpable as it reached a penalty shootout. The heartbreak for Arsenal was compounded when Gabriel saw his effort blaze over the crossbar, handing PSG a 4-3 victory and allowing them to retain the prestigious trophy they had secured 12 months prior. For Arsenal, it was a devastating end to a campaign that had promised so much.

“I’ve watched it back and it could easily be a penalty, especially when you see the penalties that they have given in the competition this season,” Arteta stated in his post-match assessment to TNT Sports, reflecting on the Madueke incident. “The referee has made that decision, he made a different one on the penalty with Mosquera, and that’s an important one.”

A Dream Start Dashed by Shootout Agony

Arsenal’s return to the Champions League final stage, their first in two decades, began with an electrifying start. Kai Havertz found the back of the net within just six minutes, igniting hopes of a historic triumph. The Gunners battled valiantly throughout the encounter, pushing the formidable PSG side to their limits. However, Dembele’s penalty and the subsequent shootout defeat meant that Arteta’s men would finish the season with only one piece of silverware – the Premier League title, their first in 22 years.

“It’s really tough to accept,” Arteta admitted, his voice heavy with disappointment. “When you are so consistent in the competition, all the way to the final, and at the end, you lose the trophy on penalty kicks. So it’s a difficult one. But I’m so proud. And I think, the season that we have had under the circumstances, just internally we know what we’ve been through. The players have given us so much joy. It is just a privilege to manage this group of players, this team. I think the way they carry this badge and how much they put into it… We got a big one [the Premier League trophy] and we missed out on the biggest one.”

Learning from the Pain: A Stepping Stone for the Future

Despite the crushing nature of this final defeat, Arteta remains resolute in his belief that the experience will serve as a valuable learning curve for his squad. He is convinced that the entire season, culminating in this dramatic finale, will provide the necessary fuel for future success.

“We need to recognise the season that we had,” he explained. “But at the moment, nobody’s going to take the pain away from you. They [PSG] are a superb team, so we congratulate them. They are very difficult to play against, that’s why they are the champions two times in a row. The quality they have, the manner of their coach, they are a top, top team. I think you have to go through the emotions and enduring pain goes with it. If you think you could have done something else, learn from it. Reflect on that and show the ambition that we want to again.”

The journey to this final was a testament to Arsenal’s resilience and consistent performance throughout the season. While the immediate sting of defeat will undoubtedly linger, the lessons learned on this grandest of stages, coupled with the drive for improvement, could well pave the way for future glories. The disappointment of this Champions League final loss will, for now, serve as a poignant reminder of how fine the margins can be at the pinnacle of European football.
