One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has boldly declared her readiness to lead the nation as Prime Minister, asserting she possesses the capability to assemble an effective cabinet and govern the country. This declaration comes as her right-wing party experiences a significant surge in public support, with recent polling suggesting a potential landslide victory.
While acknowledging the immense challenge and the uncertainty of ever achieving the top job, Senator Hanson expressed her belief in her own abilities. “I believe that I have the ability to do it,” she stated in a recent interview, adding, “I’m not going to underestimate myself or say no, I can’t do it, because… have a look at what we’ve got now… and that’s why we’re in a mess.” She indicated that her focus would be on identifying the most competent individuals for ministerial roles, regardless of their political affiliation.
A recent RedBridge/Accent Research poll has painted a striking picture of the Australian political landscape, forecasting a dramatic shift in power. The survey suggests that if an election were held today, One Nation could secure an astonishing 59 seats in Parliament. This would leave the incumbent Labor government with only a slim majority, while the Liberal Party would be reduced to a mere handful of seats, and the Nationals could find themselves entirely out of Parliament.
The One Nation leader, who transitioned from a fish-and-chip shop owner to a prominent conservative figure, conveyed strong confidence in her party’s ability to form a capable government. She highlighted the quality of her current parliamentary team, describing them as “great, down-to-earth” individuals with “marvellous” experience and knowledge.
Senator Hanson also reiterated her consideration of moving from the Senate to contest a seat in the lower house at the next federal election. However, she remained tight-lipped about her specific intentions, stating she had not yet made a firm decision and was not prepared to disclose her plans. This strategic move would align with the convention that Australia’s Prime Minister typically serves in the lower house.
Immigration Policies and Controversial Backing
On the sensitive issue of immigration, specifically concerning Muslim immigration, Senator Hanson outlined her party’s firm stance. She reiterated her desire to ban the burqa and left the door open to potentially restricting entry for individuals from specific countries. “If you’ve got people coming from these countries that are radical Islamists, and their ideology is not compatible with our country… there’s certain countries I probably would ban them coming into Australia,” she explained.
Furthermore, Senator Hanson addressed her party’s close ties with mining magnate Gina Rinehart. Ms. Rinehart’s recent substantial donation, including a million-dollar private plane that has facilitated Senator Hanson’s travel to both domestic and international events, has drawn scrutiny. Senator Hanson defended these associations, expressing gratitude for the support. “I appreciate the support she’s given me,” she said, emphasizing her transparency about the arrangement. “I’ve been open and honest with it. I don’t know why people… have a problem with my having a plane which gets me out to regional areas. It’s no cost to the taxpayer. You don’t pay for the fuel.” Ms. Rinehart, recognised as Australia’s wealthiest individual, was previously a significant supporter of the Liberal Party.
