Rajat Patidar, the skipper of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has firmly stated that he has no aspirations to take on the mantle of India’s next T20I captain. This declaration comes as RCB prepares to contest their second consecutive Indian Premier League (IPL) final.

On May 31st, RCB is slated to face the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad for the IPL 2026 championship match. Patidar has been instrumental in leading the team, having guided them to their maiden IPL title in the 2025 edition. Now, they stand just one victory away from successfully defending their championship crown.

Patidar’s astute leadership has garnered significant praise, with some sections of the fanbase already tipping him as a potential successor to the national T20I captaincy. However, the RCB skipper has dismissed these notions, asserting that he is not currently focused on any national selection prospects.

“I’m not looking forward to any selection regarding India. I don’t visualise to be the T20 captain of India,” Patidar remarked during a pre-match press conference.

The 32-year-old has earned considerable respect in recent times, largely due to his remarkable ascent in the cricketing world. He has made it clear that his immediate focus is on performing his role to the best of his ability, rather than chasing loftier ambitions.

This stance emerges at a time when discussions and speculation surrounding India’s future T20I leadership are rife. Patidar acknowledged these ongoing conversations but believes it is premature to contemplate such matters, with his sole concentration fixed on securing another IPL trophy for RCB.

RCB Captain Not Chasing Legacy

A victory in the IPL 2026 final would etch Rajat Patidar’s name in the annals of IPL history. He would join an elite club, becoming only the third captain to successfully defend an IPL title. The illustrious company he would join includes MS Dhoni, who achieved this feat with the Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and 2011, and Rohit Sharma, who led the Mumbai Indians to back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020.

Despite the potential for such a significant achievement, Patidar emphasised that records do not serve as his primary motivation. He also expressed no particular interest in comparing his captaincy to that of his predecessors.

“Every captain would want to win trophies, but then I haven’t changed myself because it is important to be yourself, that’s what I’ve tried to be and still continue to try and be,” Patidar explained. “Even if I’m the captain, it doesn’t mean I have to do anything else. So I’ve never really had to focus on what captain before me have done and compete with them or not. As an individual, I’ve had a very roller coaster of a journey and wherever I’m living I’m trying to do what I can best.”

As RCB stands on the cusp of another IPL final, Patidar’s complete focus remains squarely on the challenge ahead. He is prioritising the immediate battle on the field over personal legacy or the prospect of a national call-up. His commitment is to the team and the pursuit of continued success in the IPL.

The journey to this point has been a testament to Patidar’s leadership and the team’s collective effort. The RCB squad has shown resilience and exceptional performance throughout the season, culminating in their second successive appearance in the final. This sustained success under Patidar’s guidance highlights his ability to inspire and extract the best from his players.

The pressure of an IPL final is immense, and the expectations from the RCB faithful are sky-high. However, Patidar’s calm demeanour and his grounded approach suggest he is well-equipped to handle the intensity. His philosophy of staying true to himself and focusing on the immediate task at hand is a cornerstone of his captaincy.

The upcoming match against the Gujarat Titans promises to be a thrilling encounter. The Titans will undoubtedly be eager to prevent RCB from achieving a historic back-to-back title win. For Patidar and his team, it’s an opportunity to cement their place in IPL folklore. His refusal to be swayed by external pressures, such as national captaincy speculation, demonstrates a maturity that bodes well for RCB’s immediate future. His current objective is clear: to lead his team to another championship and continue building a strong legacy within the IPL.
