Trump Eyes Mass Rally Over “Boring” 250th Birthday Concert

In a fiery outburst on social media, former President Donald Trump has declared his intention to scrap the planned “Freedom 250” concert, a major musical event intended to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Instead, Trump proposes a colossal “Make America Great Again” rally, railing against the performers he deemed “boring,” “overpriced,” and unwelcome.

Trump’s critique extended to a scathing comparison with his ongoing dispute over the Kennedy Center, an iconic Washington D.C. arts institution. In a Truth Social post, he unequivocally stated, “We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain.” He further declared, “Cancel it, just like I canceled my involvement with the failing and unsafe to be in Kennedy Center.”

This dramatic pronouncement marks the latest chapter in the increasingly chaotic preparations for the nation’s landmark anniversary, with a significant number of performers already withdrawing from the event amidst political backlash and mounting security concerns.

Kennedy Center Controversy Fuels Trump’s Outrage

The former President’s frustration also targeted US District Judge Christopher Cooper, who recently ruled against the administration’s plans to close the Kennedy Center for extensive renovations. The judge also blocked the move to add Trump’s name to the prestigious venue. Trump labelled the Kennedy Center “broken, unsafe, and $busted, and has been for many years!” and predicted its “structural and financial collapse.”

Trump accused Judge Cooper of thwarting his vision for the venue’s restoration, going so far as to suggest the judge “should be IMPEACHED.” This ruling represents another legal setback for Trump’s ambitions to leave a significant cultural imprint on Washington. Judge Cooper’s decision concluded that the Kennedy Center board had overstepped its authority in approving the name change and halting the renovation project. Trump had previously indicated his withdrawal from the Kennedy Center initiative, stating he would cede control back to Congress rather than contend with restrictions on his proposed actions.

Trump Declares Himself the “Number One Attraction”

Now, it appears Trump intends to apply a similar logic to the national birthday celebration. Earlier on Saturday, he floated the idea of replacing the music festival with a massive rally, positioning himself as the main attraction. The 79-year-old declared himself “THE GOAT” – the greatest of all time – and asserted his readiness to take over the birthday event.

In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump proclaimed himself the “Number One Attraction anywhere in the World,” drawing a parallel to the legendary Elvis Presley. He claimed that unlike “The King,” who relied on a guitar, he only needs a microphone and a powerful speech to draw “much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime.”

While Trump won’t be donning a sequined jumpsuit or showcasing his singing talents, he plans to deliver a major speech at the proposed rally. He announced, “I am ordering my Representatives to look at the feasibility of doing an AMERICA IS BACK Rally. Same time, same location. Only Great Patriots invited – It will be a Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America!” He intends to “take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists,’ and give a major speech, rallying the Country forward like I have done ever since being President!” He asserted, “Two years ago, the United States was DEAD. Now we have the ‘HOTTEST’ Country anywhere in the World.” He expressed a preference for being “surrounded by Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN,” rather than “so-called ‘Artists’ that get paid far too much money, who aren’t happy.”

Artists Flee Amidst Divisiveness and Security Fears

Trump’s recent social media activity comes in the wake of several artists pulling out of the Freedom 250 concert. Bret Michaels, the frontman for the rock band Poison, announced his withdrawal late Thursday, citing concerns for the safety of his family, friends, and bandmates. He joins a growing list of performers, including Morris Day, Young MC, the Commodores, and Martina McBride, who have exited the event. This exodus means five out of the nine headline acts have now dropped out since the lineup was revealed, with the festival slated to take place on the National Mall in just one month.

The remaining performers, many of whom achieved fame decades ago, such as Vanilla Ice and C+C Music Factory, have drawn considerable sarcastic commentary online. Artists have stated they were initially led to believe Freedom 250 was a nonpartisan commemoration, only to discover its ties to the Trump administration.

Michaels elaborated that the event, as initially presented to him, had “evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of.” He had been persuaded by the concept of a concert that was “a celebration of our country through music and a chance to honor our veterans.” However, the escalating political climate surrounding the event had placed his loved ones and band at risk.

“Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable,” Michaels stated. He emphasised that his decision was not political but rather a commitment to his core beliefs and a serious consideration of threats and safety concerns.

Michaels’s departure exacerbates the crisis for the event organisers, leaving only four acts: Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, C+C Music Factory, and Milli Vanilli.

Vanilla Ice Defends Participation

Amidst the controversy, rapper Vanilla Ice has defended his decision to perform at Freedom 250, confirming his continued participation. The “Ice Ice Baby” hitmaker told TMZ that music’s purpose is to unite the country and that the focus should solely be on celebrating the United States. “I’m here to party with America, man. Music is made to bring people together and that’s what we are here to do. And we’re just gonna represent the 90s,” he explained.

Robert Van Winkle, known professionally as Vanilla Ice, added that he doesn’t “take anything too serious” and believes others shouldn’t either. He reiterated that the intention is to “bring people together” rather than engage in political discourse.

Trump’s Long-Standing Elvis Fascination

Trump’s comparisons to Elvis Presley are not new. He has previously claimed that people remarked on his resemblance to the late musician during his youth. In 2018, while in Tupelo, Mississippi, Trump shared, “Other than the blonde hair, when I was growing up they said I looked like Elvis… great compliment.” That same year, after posthumously awarding Elvis the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Trump mentioned attending one of the rock icon’s concerts.

More recently, in 2024, Trump shared a side-by-side image of his face and Presley’s, asking his followers for their opinions on their perceived likeness. Earlier this year, during a tour of Graceland, Elvis’s Memphis estate, Trump reportedly asked a staff member if he thought he could defeat Elvis in a fight. The employee diplomatically suggested the musician would have allowed the President to win.

Before his Graceland visit, Trump, who never met Elvis, quipped about the possibility of fabricating a story about having met “The King of Rock and Roll.” Speaking to law enforcement and National Guard troops in Memphis, Trump praised the Memphis Safe Task Force for reducing crime. He mentioned his upcoming visit to Graceland, stating, “I’m going to see Graceland after this. I love Elvis. I never met Elvis. Everyone said, ‘Did you?’ I met [Frank] Sinatra. I knew all of them. I never met Elvis. Sometimes I feel I should tell little fibs that I knew him.”

Trump’s campaign rallies have frequently featured iconic Elvis songs such as “Suspicious Minds,” “If I Can Dream,” and “An American Trilogy.”

Other Social Media Engagements

Trump’s Saturday posts extended beyond the concert controversy. He also expressed his gratitude to New York Giants player Jaxson Dart for introducing him at a recent rally, writing, “Thank you Jaxson! It was great being with you.” He acknowledged the “heat” Dart might be receiving from the “Radical Left Lunatics” but praised him as a “WINNER” whose jersey reached number one and who was “making Millions of Dollars.”

Another post featured an AI-generated image of Trump playing basketball against New York Governor Kathy Hochul, with Trump wearing a Knicks jersey and dunking. He captioned it, “PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP vs. Kathy Hochul, New York’s failed Governor who, if people are smart, will vote for Bruce Blakeman – He will, MAKE NEW YORK GREAT AGAIN!”

In a sports-themed post, he lauded Tom Brady as a “great player and great guy.” He also shared images of children playing outdoors with the caption, “America is back!” In a separate post, he shared a photo of a trash can juxtaposed with an image of where former President Barack Obama’s new Chicago library was intended to be, alongside a picture of himself golfing.
