Vivid Sydney Drone Spectacle Grounded After Unforeseen Technical Glitch

Vivid Sydney, the city’s much-anticipated light festival, has been forced to cancel the remainder of its highly publicised drone shows following a significant technical malfunction that saw nearly 90 drones plunge into Darling Harbour on Monday night. The ambitious aerial displays, a centrepiece of this year’s festival, were scheduled to illuminate the night sky on multiple occasions. Organisers have announced that these will now be replaced with traditional fireworks.

In a statement released on Saturday morning, Vivid Sydney confirmed the cancellation, citing an “unforeseen technical issue” as the cause for the drones’ descent. Investigations into the incident are currently being conducted by Sky Magic, the British company responsible for orchestrating the complex drone performances.

“Following Monday night’s unforeseen technical issue at the Vivid Sydney Star-Bound drone performance, Vivid Sydney can confirm the remaining drone shows scheduled for this year’s festival will not proceed,” the statement detailed.

The decision to permanently ground the drone shows for the duration of Vivid Sydney 2026 comes after extensive technical, operational, and regulatory assessments were carried out by Sky Magic. While these assessments are still ongoing in certain aspects, the conclusion has been reached that the drone performances will not be a part of the festival’s remaining schedule.

Public safety has been consistently emphasised as the paramount concern throughout this situation. All decisions regarding the future of the drone shows have been informed by expert technical and regulatory advice.

The incident on Monday evening involved the 7:30 pm Star-Bound show, which featured a fleet of 1000 drones. During this performance, 83 drones unexpectedly fell into the waters of Darling Harbour.

The festival organisers have confirmed that a retrieval operation is currently underway. A spokesperson for Vivid Sydney indicated that the recovery efforts are being meticulously co-ordinated with the specialist drone operator, in close consultation with relevant stakeholders and government agencies, including the NSW Environment Protection Authority.

“Assessments are ongoing regarding the safest and most practical approach to recovery operations, including any potential environmental considerations associated with the drones entering the water,” the spokesperson elaborated.

Furthermore, the spokesperson highlighted that “visibility conditions” are playing a crucial role in determining the precise timing and methodology of the drone retrieval. Ensuring that any recovery activity can be conducted safely and effectively is a key priority for the operators.

Sky Magic has attributed the malfunction on Monday to an unexpected alteration in the “radio frequency environment.” The company described this as an “anomaly” that had not been detected during prior site inspections and rehearsal periods.

The immediate aftermath of the incident led to the cancellation of the drone shows planned for Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The official announcement on Saturday confirmed the complete cessation of all remaining drone performances for the festival.

Originally, these captivating drone shows were slated to occur twice nightly from Sundays through to Wednesdays, totalling 22 performances across the festival’s 11-night run, which concludes on June 13th. Each display was designed to showcase up to 1000 drones creating intricate patterns in the harbour for up to 12 minutes.

The drone show was marketed as an outdoor spectacle, subject to weather conditions. The Vivid Sydney website had previously advised attendees that performances might be cancelled at short notice if weather conditions were deemed unsafe by the specialist operators.

This year’s drone program was intended to be the largest in the festival’s history. However, it’s worth noting that drone shows were also cancelled in 2025, following recommendations from police and transport authorities due to concerns about potential crowd congestion around Circular Quay in 2024.
