Florida Issues Statewide Travel Advisory Amidst World Cup Concerns

As the world gears up for the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup, a significant concern has emerged for international visitors planning to travel to Florida. A coalition of prominent civil and human rights organizations has issued a statewide travel alert for the Sunshine State, urging extreme caution for those intending to visit, particularly in light of enhanced immigration enforcement measures.

The advisory warns that stepped-up immigration enforcement in Florida could inadvertently increase the risk of racial profiling, wrongful detentions, and even deportations for international visitors. The groups are strongly advising tourists and visiting football fans to carry identification at all times and to register their travel plans with their respective consulates before their arrival.

Furthermore, the coalition recommends that travelers seriously reconsider their plans to visit Florida until perceived issues of accountability and transparency in enforcement practices are adequately addressed.

“Florida is no longer a safe destination for international tourists,” stated Tessa Petit, Executive Director of the Florida Immigrant Coalition. She expressed concerns that both visitors and residents could face detention without just cause and be unfairly targeted based on their appearance, language, or accent.

Tourism Officials Rebuff Travel Advisory

The travel alert has been met with strong criticism from Florida’s tourism officials, who have dismissed the warnings as politically motivated and detrimental to the state’s economy and tourism industry.

Bryan Griffin, President and CEO of the tourism group Visit Florida, vehemently refuted the claims. “These ‘advisories’ are ridiculous and, unfortunately, politically-motivated stunts that needlessly seek to harm our state and industry,” Griffin stated. He emphasized that lawful visitors have nothing to fear and that Florida eagerly anticipates welcoming hundreds of thousands of travelers for what is expected to be a vibrant hub for World Cup celebrations. “Visitors can expect an enjoyable, safe, and easy travel experience in Florida,” he assured.

Basis for the Travel Alert

The coalition’s concerns are reportedly rooted in documented instances reported by journalists and other civil rights organizations. These reports detail cases where U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and tourists have allegedly been detained following routine interactions with law enforcement, including traffic stops.

The organizations also highlighted accounts of individuals being held for extended periods with limited access to legal counsel or consular assistance. While Reuters could not independently verify the specific incidents cited in the advisory, the coalition’s claims underscore a broader concern about the potential for overreach in immigration enforcement.

A key factor contributing to the coalition’s apprehension is Florida’s expanded cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and federal immigration authorities. This collaboration empowers trained local officers to undertake certain immigration enforcement functions. Civil liberties advocates argue that such arrangements can lead to the over-policing of immigrant communities. Conversely, proponents of these programs maintain that they are essential for enhancing public safety.

World Cup Context and Miami’s Role

The issuance of this travel alert comes at a critical juncture as the United States prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament, scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of international visitors to various host cities across the country. Miami, in particular, is slated to host seven matches of the expanded 48-team global football spectacle.

The U.S. is sharing hosting duties for this prestigious event with its North American neighbors, Canada and Mexico, creating a unique cross-border tournament experience. The influx of diverse international fans and participants underscores the importance of ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all. The travel advisory, therefore, casts a shadow over the optimistic outlook for the World Cup’s success in Florida, highlighting a tension between enhanced security measures and the rights and freedoms of individuals.
