Vanilla Ice, the iconic rapper whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, has enthusiastically confirmed his participation, stepping in after a string of high-profile artists withdrew their commitments.
The event, dubbed the “stars-and-stripes-palooza” and organised by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership initiated by former President Donald Trump, aims to commemorate a significant milestone in American history. However, the announcement of the Washington D.C. festivities was soon followed by a wave of cancellations. Notable names such as Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, The Commodores, Young MC, and Morris Day all pulled out of their scheduled performances, citing various reasons, often alluding to the event’s perceived political affiliations.
In contrast, Vanilla Ice, at 58 years old, has expressed nothing but excitement about taking the stage next month. Speaking with TMZ, he was clear about his intentions, stating he wouldn’t be “dragged into” any political controversy surrounding the concert.
“I’m here to party with America, man,” he declared. “Music is made to bring people together, and that’s what we are here to do. And we’re just gonna represent the Nineties.”
Van Winkle, who confessed he doesn’t even vote, emphasised his focus on celebrating America’s anniversary rather than engaging with political discourse. He offered a stark perspective on his willingness to perform, suggesting he’d play for anyone, including a hypothetical request from President Biden for his daughter’s wedding, or even for Russian President Putin or in Iran.
“You play for your fans. We don’t get a chance to pick our fans; they pick us,” he explained. “I’ll go play for Putin, and I’ll go play in Iran if you want. It don’t matter. There’s fans everywhere. Music is not political, man. It’s universal, it just brings people together.”
He also addressed the decisions of other artists to withdraw, urging a less serious approach. “Don’t take it so serious. We’re just entertainers, man,” he asserted. “I don’t think anybody should take this serious, including them. I think everybody should just go dance. It’s just music, what’s the big deal, man?”
Vanilla Ice echoed these sentiments on Instagram, sharing his enthusiasm for the event. “It’s all about enjoying the great times of 250 years, man. From George Washington until now, all the presidents and everybody in between,” he posted.
In the caption, he further elaborated on his vision for the fair: “It’s gonna be an epic party. This is to bring us all together. I’m tired of all the news channels dividing this country. We are all one. This is not a political platform. This is celebrating America’s birthday.”

He used Instagram to announce, “Contrary to rumour, Morris Day & The Time will not be performing at the Great American State Fair. It’s a no for me.”
