Shahidul Islam Appointed Vice-Chancellor of MBSTU

Dhaka, May 17 — Professor ABM Shahidul Islam, a distinguished faculty member of the Marketing Department at Dhaka University, officially took up his position as the new Vice-Chancellor of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) on Saturday.

He started his term by laying a wreath at the mazar of Mawlana Bhashani. Following the prayer, he signed the guestbook, expressing his thoughts on the late national figure.

Later, in the Vice-Chancellor’s office, the departing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand, greeted the new VC and officially transferred the duties. After the transfer, Prof. Islam conducted an introductory meeting with the university’s deans, registrar, chairpersons of departments, provosts, and heads of various offices.

The university’s President and Chancellor selected Prof. Islam for a four-year tenure on May 14, 2026.

A person from Tangail, Professor Islam’s appointment has generated excitement among locals. He had previously achieved the 4th position in the Dhaka Board while studying for his HSC at Government Maulana Mohammad Ali College in Tangail.

Having spent 40 years in teaching and administration, Professor Islam is a Commonwealth Scholar who obtained his M.Phil from the University of Strathclyde in the UK and his PhD from Dhaka University.

This signifies his second term as Vice-Chancellor, after previously working at Leading University in Sylhet from 2006 to 2009. He has also occupied various prominent roles, such as Director of the Bureau of Business Research (BBR) at Dhaka University and Chairman of the Center for Development and Policy Research.

Upon joining, the new Vice-Chancellor expressed his desire to work together with faculty members, students, and staff to promote the university’s comprehensive growth. He highlighted his dedication to improving research standards and creating a contemporary, “session-jam-free” academic atmosphere, as stated in a press release.
