Political Power Struggles in Rivers State Delay Governor Fubara’s Formal Reception into APC

The political dynamics in Rivers State have created a significant hurdle for the formal reception of Governor Siminalayi Fubara into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This issue has sparked discussions among analysts, stakeholders, and party members, highlighting the complex interplay of power and loyalty within the state.

A Change of Allegiance

Governor Fubara made a pivotal decision on December 9, 2025, when he announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the APC. His move was initially met with enthusiasm, as it was seen as a break from the influence of his godfather. The APC state chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, presented the party registration card to the governor, bearing number 001, on the directive of the party’s national chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda.

However, despite this gesture, the APC leadership has not yet held the grand reception that is typically reserved for sitting governors who join from other parties. Such events are usually marked by the presence of key figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, other governors, and prominent APC personalities.

The Significance of a Reception

Political analysts emphasize the importance of such a reception, as it serves as a public acknowledgment of the governor’s acceptance into the party. Without this recognition, some may still view Fubara as an outsider or “gatecrasher.” One analyst likened the process to a wedding, where the reception symbolizes the union and commitment.

Other governors who defected to the APC after Fubara have all been formally received, raising questions about why Fubara has not yet experienced the same treatment. These include Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Muftwang Caleb of Plateau State, and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara.

Tensions and Power Dynamics

The delay in Fubara’s reception appears to be linked to tensions between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT). While President Bola Tinubu has intervened to ease the political crisis, both sides remain cautious, keeping their strategies close to their chests.

It is reported that Fubara joined the APC without informing his predecessor, which may have led to a power struggle over control of party structures. Organizing a reception could send the wrong message, potentially signaling that Fubara is the sole leader of the APC in the state. This could create friction with Wike, who maintains a strong grip on both APC and PDP structures in Rivers State.

Concerns Over the Governor’s Position

Stakeholders in the state have expressed concern over the delay in Fubara’s formal reception. Some believe that the APC leadership should welcome the governor to build confidence among the people. However, there are fears that if the reception is not held, it could negatively impact the APC’s chances in the 2027 general elections.

A political stakeholder, Chief Chris Finebone, emphasized the need for the APC to officially welcome the governor, stating that the delay might not be related to the governor’s issues with the FCT minister. He suggested that the party’s busy schedule could be a factor.

Another local, Comrade David-West Benewarie, noted that Fubara is already a registered member of the APC and that the party should recognize him as its leader in the state. He highlighted the importance of the reception in boosting confidence ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Role of National Leadership

The chairman of the APC in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, stated that the responsibility for organizing the reception lies with the national leadership, not the state level. He emphasized that it is a national issue and that the national leadership will handle it.

A source at the party’s national secretariat mentioned that no official decision has been made regarding the reception. They clarified that while Governor Fubara is a member of the APC, there is no constitutional requirement for such a ceremony, making it more of a tradition than a necessity.

Despite these statements, the situation remains unresolved, with many wondering how long the governor will be kept in suspense. As the political landscape in Rivers State continues to evolve, the outcome of Fubara’s reception will likely shape the future of the APC in the region.
