Kombi Drivers Accused of Kidnapping Traffic Officer, Theft in Harare
Two Harare-based commuter omnibus (kombi) drivers have been remanded in custody as investigations continue into charges of kidnapping a traffic police officer and theft. The accused, Anywork Simbe and Brighton Nyamukanda, both aged 30, appeared before Magistrate Ruth Moyo to face the serious allegations.
The incident, as presented in court, highlights a brazen confrontation between transport operators and law enforcement officials in the bustling capital city. According to the prosecution, the ordeal began when the complainant, a traffic police officer on duty, observed a kombi operated by the accused picking up passengers at an unauthorized location. This particular infraction occurred at the busy intersection of Robert Mugabe and Julius Nyerere streets, a common hub for public transport.
The officer, acting on her duty to enforce traffic regulations, discreetly boarded the vehicle. A colleague reportedly followed at a safe distance, prepared to provide backup if necessary. Upon boarding, the complainant identified herself to the drivers and informed them that their vehicle was being impounded due to the violation.
However, instead of cooperating with the lawful arrest, the situation escalated dramatically. The court heard that the accused, Simbe and Nyamukanda, allegedly refused to comply. In a shocking turn of events, they are accused of speeding off with the officer still inside the kombi.
The alleged abduction continued for a significant distance. The prosecution outlined that Simbe, who was reportedly driving, eventually brought the vehicle to a halt near the Highlands shops. It was at this location, away from the initial scene, that the alleged assault and theft took place.
According to the charges, both Simbe and Nyamukanda then forcibly removed the complainant from the vehicle. In the ensuing struggle, they are accused of stealing her personal belongings. This included her wallet, which contained a substantial amount of cash, specifically US$396. Furthermore, the identification documents and various cards belonging to the officer were also allegedly taken.
Following the alleged theft and assault, the two drivers are accused of making their escape, speeding away from the scene and leaving the officer distressed and dispossessed. The total value of the stolen items has been assessed at US$396. As of the latest court proceedings, none of the stolen property has been recovered.
The case underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining order and enforcing regulations within the public transport sector. The alleged actions of the kombi drivers, if proven, represent a grave disregard for the law and a direct threat to the safety of public officials. The court has remanded the two men in custody, indicating the seriousness with which these charges are being treated. Further investigations are expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the full extent of the alleged criminal activity. The legal process will now determine the guilt or innocence of the accused.
