Strict Enforcement of Worship Facility Regulations Underway

PUTRAJAYA – The Malaysian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has issued a firm directive: no place of worship, whether under construction or already operational, will be permitted if it fails to adhere to existing laws and regulations. This clear stance underscores the administration’s commitment to upholding legal frameworks and preventing the proliferation of unauthorised religious sites across the nation.

Local authorities have been empowered and mandated to take decisive action against any developments that fall outside the purview of proper legal standing. This includes the necessary clearing and management of areas where activities, particularly those related to places of worship, are being conducted without the requisite approvals.

“I wish to stress that the government will not permit any construction or activity that does not comply with the law and existing regulations,” Prime Minister Anwar stated during his address at the Ministry of National Unity’s monthly assembly. “Local authorities that have been granted the mandate must take action to clear and manage areas where activities are carried out unlawfully.”

The Prime Minister further elaborated on the government’s position, asserting that it is untenable to justify the protection of a significant number of temples or any places of worship that have been established without obtaining proper approval or securing legal land status. This measured approach aims to address concerns regarding land ownership, zoning, and adherence to community planning guidelines.

Addressing Claims of Religious Discrimination

Prime Minister Anwar addressed allegations that these enforcement actions constitute religious discrimination. He emphasised that advocacy for any religion must be conducted with a foundation of wisdom, integrity, and by setting a good example. Such efforts, he stressed, should not be pursued through provocation or by deliberately disregarding established laws.

He also voiced his disappointment with what he described as misleading and extreme narratives that have emerged surrounding this issue. The Prime Minister criticised certain individuals, including a former minister, for reportedly making irresponsible statements. These statements, he noted, have falsely claimed that specific religious communities in Malaysia face impediments in practising their faith freely.

“Such statements cannot be ignored or concealed,” Prime Minister Anwar declared. He went on to highlight a concerning trend where these individuals are attempting to reposition themselves as new ‘champions’. Their purported defence of the nation or protection of sovereignty, he noted, often involves exploiting issues such as trade agreements with the United States, while simultaneously stoking excessive racial and religious sentiments.

“This is deeply regrettable, especially when such views receive support from several Members of Parliament,” he added, expressing his concern over the amplification of divisive rhetoric within political circles.

Government’s Consistent Policy on Religious Freedom

Reiterating the government’s unwavering stance, Prime Minister Anwar affirmed that its policy on religious matters is both clear and consistent. The administration has no intention of interfering with the religious practices of any community. The focus, he clarified, is on ensuring that all activities, including the establishment and operation of places of worship, are conducted within the established legal and regulatory frameworks of Malaysia. This approach seeks to balance the fundamental right to religious freedom with the imperative of maintaining order, ensuring equitable development, and respecting the rule of law for all citizens.
