Johor Government Pours Significant Funding into Chinese Community Initiatives for CNY

The Johor state government has unveiled a substantial financial package totalling nearly RM17 million, earmarked to support the Chinese community in various crucial areas, including education, cultural preservation, community development, and festive celebrations for the upcoming Chinese New Year. This significant allocation underscores the state’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and strengthening the bonds within the diverse “Bangsa Johor” community.

Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced the breakdown of these funds, highlighting key beneficiaries and their designated purposes. A substantial RM1 million has been directed towards Southern University College (SUC), a vital institution for higher learning within the Chinese community. Furthermore, RM3.27 million is set aside for 10 Chinese independent secondary schools, crucial for maintaining the unique educational heritage of these institutions. An additional RM1.3 million will be distributed among 219 national-type Chinese schools (SJKC), specifically to enhance facilities for teachers and support the invaluable work of parent-teacher associations (PIBG).

Beyond educational support, the state government is also championing cultural and religious activities. A significant RM1.5 million has been allocated to the “Maju Johor” lion dance programme, a vibrant and integral part of Chinese New Year festivities. In recognition of the diverse religious landscape, RM2 million will be channelled to non-Muslim houses of worship and Tiong Hua non-governmental organisations, supporting their operational needs and community outreach programmes.

Moreover, the government is extending its support to rural communities through the “Bantuan Kasih Johor” initiative. A sum of RM3 million has been designated for Chinese new villages, aiming to improve infrastructure and quality of life for residents in these areas. This announcement was made during a festive Chinese New Year dinner and fellowship event held at Che Ann Khor Yong Peng.

Datuk Onn Hafiz further elaborated that an additional RM4.36 million has been earmarked to bolster programmes and activities directly associated with the Chinese New Year celebrations. This includes crucial provisions for the distribution of “ang pow” (red packets), a cherished tradition symbolising good fortune and blessings.

The Menteri Besar emphasised that this year’s allocation represents the highest ever provided by the Johor state government in recent memory. He attributed this considerable increase to the state’s robust economic performance and enhanced revenue collection. Notably, he linked this positive financial outlook to strategic investments, including those stemming from the development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which is poised to drive further economic growth and prosperity for the state.

The Johor state government reiterated its unwavering commitment to the welfare of all its citizens, irrespective of their racial or religious backgrounds. The overarching goal remains the strengthening of unity and fostering a cohesive society, guided by the inclusive spirit of “Bangsa Johor,” where every community feels valued and supported. This comprehensive financial package serves as a testament to that commitment, ensuring that the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations are not only joyous but also contribute to the long-term development and well-being of the Chinese community in Johor.
