Cattle Trader Fatally Shot in Narsingdi Village Dispute
Narsingdi, Bangladesh – February 9 – A 50-year-old cattle trader was fatally shot by unknown assailants on Sunday night in the Gazipura village of Raipura upazila, Narsingdi. The victim, identified as Rafikul Islam, was the husband of a local Union Parishad (UP) member.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 PM, according to Union Parishad Chairman Ahsan Shikder, who confirmed the details of the shooting. Rafikul Islam was reportedly returning home from a local market when the assailants opened fire on him. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Rafikul Islam, a cattle trader by profession, was married to Lovely Begum, who serves as the elected woman member for Ward No. 6 of the Charmadhuya Union Parishad. This connection to local governance has raised questions about potential motives behind the attack.
Following the shooting, Rafikul Islam’s family members rushed him to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Despite their efforts, the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
The Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Md Mujibur Rahman, stated that initial indications suggest the killing may not be politically motivated. He indicated that a pre-existing family dispute with a neighbour is being considered as a potential factor. However, police are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the murder and identify all individuals involved.
“We are currently gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to piece together the events that led to this tragic incident,” stated OC Rahman. “While a family dispute is a line of inquiry, we are not ruling out any possibilities until the investigation is complete.”
