Analyzing Online Racism: A Look at the “Autopsy of a Message” Initiative
From March 21st to March 27th, the Anti-Racist Group for the Support and Defense of Foreigners and Migrants (GADEM) has unveiled a significant initiative titled “Autopsy of a Message.” This series is dedicated to a critical examination of racist content that proliferates online, particularly in the backdrop of major events like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025). While the focus is on the intersection of sports and online discourse, the initiative extends its reach to align with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. GADEM’s stated objective is to “better understand the mechanisms” that drive these divisive narratives.
The timing of this campaign, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, provides a crucial window for GADEM. The organization aims to “grasp how racial prejudice and xenophobia manifest online, and the impact they have on the societies in which they take root.” Through a planned seven online publications, the “Autopsy of a Message” series intends to systematically dissect common racist narratives. It will delve into their origins, explain the underlying logic and context, and critically assess them against the framework of Moroccan law. This multi-faceted approach seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon.
Unpacking Online Narratives and Societal Impact
GADEM has observed a nuanced reaction to the influx of xenophobic messages and racial prejudices. The NGO highlighted that while a segment of the Moroccan population was indeed negatively affected by these sentiments, a significantly larger portion of society did not align themselves with such views. This observation suggests a societal division in response to online hate speech. GADEM further emphasized that “only a minority actively contributed to spreading these narratives and fueling negative sentiment,” indicating that the perpetuation of such content is not a universal phenomenon but rather driven by a specific, active group.
In contrast to the spread of divisive content, GADEM also pointed to a positive counter-narrative. The association recalled that “at the same time, several public calls for respect and cohesion highlighted the spirit of brotherhood that marked the competition.” This demonstrates a concurrent effort within society to promote inclusivity and solidarity, even amidst the presence of racist discourse. These calls for unity underscore the resilience of positive social values and the desire for harmonious coexistence.
Towards a Collective Understanding and Action
The “Autopsy of a Message” series is designed not only to analyze but also to foster a broader societal dialogue. The initiative will culminate in a collective discussion, taking the form of a public roundtable. This event is set to be a key component of the L’Mchaoura meetings, a platform dedicated to engaging the public on important social issues.
The series aims to achieve several key objectives:
- Deconstructing Racist Tropes: Identifying and breaking down the recurring patterns and stereotypes found in online racist content.
- Contextualizing Narratives: Providing historical, social, and political context for the emergence and spread of xenophobic messages.
- Legal Examination: Analyzing the content against existing legal frameworks, specifically Moroccan law, to understand potential violations and legal recourse.
- Impact Assessment: Evaluating the real-world impact of online racism on individuals and communities.
- Promoting Counter-Narratives: Highlighting and amplifying messages of tolerance, respect, and solidarity.
By dissecting these online messages, GADEM hopes to equip individuals with the critical thinking skills necessary to identify and reject racism. The initiative underscores the importance of understanding the mechanisms of online prejudice to effectively combat its spread and mitigate its harmful effects on society. The concluding roundtable discussion is intended to serve as a catalyst for continued engagement and action against racial discrimination.
