Zamfara State Unveils Ambitious Healthcare Overhaul with Billions in Funding
Zamfara State, Nigeria – Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration has embarked on a transformative journey to revitalize the health sector across all 14 local government areas of Zamfara State. In a significant move, billions of naira have been allocated for the comprehensive upgrade and renovation of nine General Hospitals and an extensive network of 14 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs). This initiative underscores a deep commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality for the state’s populace.
The strategic allocation of resources is clearly reflected in the recently approved 2026 budget. A thorough analysis of this budget reveals that a total of 23 healthcare facilities, encompassing both general hospitals and primary healthcare centres, have been earmarked for crucial renovation, expansion, and upgrading projects. Governor Lawal has demonstrated the administration’s unwavering support for the health sector by dedicating a substantial sum of N87 billion to its development within the current fiscal year.
The N87 billion allocated to the health sector is part of a larger N871.3 billion appropriation bill that Governor Lawal presented to the Zamfara State House of Assembly on December 4, 2025. Following rigorous deliberations and subsequent approval by the state legislature, the bill was officially signed into law on December 19. This substantial budget is strategically divided, with capital expenditure accounting for a significant 83% (N714 billion) and recurrent expenditure making up the remaining 17% (N147.28 billion). The overarching priorities of this budget are clearly defined, with a strong emphasis on health, infrastructure development, security enhancement, educational advancement, and agricultural growth.
Revitalizing General Hospitals: A Multi-Billion Naira Investment
The nine general hospitals slated for significant upgrades and renovations represent key healthcare hubs within the state. Each facility has received substantial budgetary allocations designed to facilitate comprehensive improvements.
- Talata Mafara General Hospital: This facility will benefit from an investment of N4 billion, earmarked for extensive renovation and upgrades.
- Gummi General Hospital: A sum of N2.2 billion has been allocated for the improvement and modernization of Gummi General Hospital.
- Dansadau General Hospital: This hospital is set to receive N2 billion for its renovation and upgrade.
- Gusau General Hospital: The state capital’s primary general hospital will undergo significant improvements with an allocation of N2 billion.
- Bungudu General Hospital: N2 billion has been designated for the renovation and upgrade of Bungudu General Hospital.
- Moriki General Hospital: This facility will see upgrades funded by an allocation of N500 million.
- General Hospital Anka: A sum of N200 million has been earmarked for the renovation of General Hospital Anka.
- General Hospital Magami: N200 million will be invested in the renovation of General Hospital Magami.
- General Hospital Mada: This hospital is set to receive N200 million for its renovation.
In addition to the infrastructural improvements, the Zamfara State government has also committed N1.8 billion specifically for the procurement of essential medical equipment across these nine general hospitals. This dual approach of facility renovation and equipment modernization aims to equip these hospitals with the necessary tools to provide advanced medical care.
Strengthening the Primary Healthcare Network
The commitment to improving healthcare extends beyond general hospitals to the foundational level of primary healthcare. Fourteen primary healthcare centres across various local government areas are slated for comprehensive renovation and expansion. These centres play a critical role in delivering essential health services to communities, particularly in remote areas.
The initial phase of renovations and expansions will focus on PHCs in the following local government areas, each receiving an allocation of N1.5 billion:
- Tsafe LGA
- Gusau LGA
- Kaura Namoda LGA
- Talata Mafara LGA
- Gummi LGA
- Maru LGA
- Bungudu LGA
Furthermore, another set of primary healthcare centres have been identified for a total overhaul and expansion, with each receiving an allocation of N1 billion:
- Shinkafi LGA
- Zurmi LGA
- Birnin Magaji LGA
- Bukkuyum LGA
- Anka LGA
- Bakura LGA
- Maradun LGA
