Opposition Party Urges Transparency in Liberia-Guinea Border Dispute
The Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) has issued a strong call to President Joseph Boakai and the Liberian government, urging them to refrain from “dramatic” reactions to the escalating Liberia-Guinea border dispute. Instead, the MPC advocates for clear and comprehensive information to be disseminated to the public regarding the ongoing situation.
For decades, commercial activities have reportedly been conducted along the disputed border region without any significant confrontations between Liberia and Guinea. The MPC has raised pointed questions as to why tensions have suddenly surged under the current Unity Party-led administration. The party also expressed concern over what it terms as “micromanagement” of information by the government, demanding a full disclosure of the specific triggers that led to the current dispute.
During a press briefing held at the MPC’s headquarters in Airfield, Sinkor, the party’s Director of Press, Michael C. E. Marshall, addressed the media. He acknowledged widespread reports suggesting that mining activities in the area are at the heart of the escalating tensions. However, Marshall noted with concern that the government has yet to officially confirm or deny these persistent claims.
Marshall elaborated that official government communications have predominantly offered reassurances that the matter is being addressed through diplomatic channels. While acknowledging the importance of diplomacy, he criticized the lack of focus on identifying and addressing the fundamental root causes of the conflict.
The MPC spokesman leveled accusations against the government, alleging that crucial details surrounding the dispute are being deliberately withheld. He emphasized the need for greater transparency in the government’s handling of this sensitive issue.
“Guinea did not just wake up one morning and begin seizing Liberian land; there must be a reason,” Marshall stated emphatically. “We believe those reasons are being concealed by the government.”
Furthermore, Marshall referenced reports indicating that equipment allegedly seized by Guinean authorities has been examined. This development, he suggested, raises serious concerns about potential undisclosed dealings or illicit mining activities that may be intrinsically linked to the ongoing incident. The MPC believes that such information, if true, needs to be brought to light.
The MPC representative implored the government to adopt a more proactive approach to public communication, moving away from what he described as the “micromanaging” of information pertinent to the border dispute.
Recognizing the dispute as a potential threat to national security, Marshall underscored the imperative for the government to prioritize a diplomatic resolution. Crucially, he stressed that this diplomatic effort must be complemented by the timely and accurate dissemination of verified information to the Liberian populace.
