In a moment of immense pressure and heartbreak, Arsenal’s Champions League dream was extinguished in a dramatic penalty shootout against reigning champions PSG. While the Gunners fought valiantly throughout the final in Budapest, ultimately succumbing to a 4-2 defeat on penalties after the match ended 1-1 after extra time, it was the willingness of defender Gabriel to step up for the decisive fifth penalty that has captured attention.
Despite the crushing disappointment, manager Mikel Arteta revealed that the Brazilian centre-back not only volunteered to take a penalty but specifically requested the responsibility of taking what is often the most crucial spot-kick. This display of courage and self-belief in the face of such high stakes speaks volumes about the character within the Arsenal squad.
The Weight of the Fifth Penalty
Arsenal had taken an early lead through Kai Havertz, sparking hopes of a maiden Champions League title. However, a second-half penalty from Ousmane Dembele levelled the scores, forcing the match into a nerve-wracking extra-time period and subsequently, a penalty shootout.
As the shootout progressed, the pressure mounted. After Eberechi Eze missed his opportunity, the fate of Arsenal’s Champions League aspirations fell to Gabriel. Tragically, his effort sailed over the crossbar, confirming PSG’s victory and their retention of the prestigious trophy.
Arteta, speaking after the match, shed light on Gabriel’s remarkable request. “He wanted to take number five,” the Arsenal boss stated in his post-match press conference. “We have trained and prepared for this moment. Normally the penalty-takers would be Bukayo [Saka], Martin [Odegaard] and Kai [Havertz] for sure. We knew it would be different players if we went to penalties, but we still backed the players and their quality because in training they don’t miss any. But then you have to do it in the moment and we didn’t have the same precision as PSG had.”
Reflecting on a Season of Ups and Downs
Beyond the penalty shootout drama, Arteta expressed immense pride in his team’s overall performance throughout the season. He acknowledged PSG’s quality, stating, “PSG are a superb team and I congratulate them. The individual quality they have, the manner they are coached, they are a top, top team.”
The manager emphasised the importance of learning from such painful experiences. “You have to go through the emotions and if you’re in pain, then go through the pain. Think you could do something else, then learn from it. Reflect on that and show the ambition that we want to have again.”
Arteta continued to laud his players: “I am so proud of this team, with this season we have had under the circumstances. Internally, we know what we have been through. It is just a privilege to manage this group of players and this team the way they carry this badge and how much they put into it. We got a big one [Premier League] and missed out on the biggest one.”
Declan Rice’s Perspective: Pride and Resilience
Midfielder Declan Rice also fronted up to the media, articulating the profound disappointment felt by the squad. “It’s gutting, it’s devastating to lose a Champions League final on penalties,” the England international told TNT Sports.
Despite the immediate pain, Rice sought to provide perspective on Arsenal’s journey. “Trying to take perspective on how far we’ve come as a group. Incredible season, gave it absolutely everything, we took the game to penalties. It’s a lottery, it’s football. You can either win or lose on penalties. Some of the best teams ever have lost on penalties and we were on the receiving end of that tonight.”
He concluded with a message of unity and future determination: “We win together, we lose together, I’m so proud of these boys. I can’t speak highly enough of everyone. I’m obviously gutted but I’m trying to take perspective. It’s been an incredible journey this season. We will be back.”
The Gunners’ Champions League campaign may have ended in heartbreak, but the resilience and ambition shown throughout the season, exemplified by players like Gabriel and Rice, suggest that this is merely a stepping stone for future success.
