Oscar Piastri’s Potential Move to Red Bull
Oscar Piastri has been making waves in the Formula One world recently. While Max Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull is set to expire in 2028, there have been ongoing discussions about Piastri potentially replacing the Dutch driver if he decides to retire from the sport.
During an episode of the Up To Speed Podcast, Will Buxton and co-host Naomi Schiff discussed this possibility. Schiff expressed her belief that Piastri could be a good fit for Red Bull, citing his ability to stay calm under pressure and his consistent performance on the track. She also noted that Red Bull appears to be taking Verstappen’s potential retirement seriously, which highlights Piastri’s value as a driver.
“Hats off to him because yes, he didn’t win the championship last year, but he was a very, very strong contender. And he’s such a consistent, sort of ice-cold, never really lets his emotions get the best of him.
“And I think that for that reason, he’s quite a good fit for Red Bull. Not that that doesn’t make him a good fit for McLaren, but I actually could see him in a Red Bull seat.”
Buxton referenced a previous comment by former Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner, who openly expressed regret over not signing Piastri for the junior team. He added that given the current circumstances, it’s not surprising to see Piastri on Red Bull’s radar, or any other team’s for that matter.
“They (Alpine) shouldn’t have then let McLaren get their hands on him and tear him away from Alpine. They know they missed the bus when it came to Oscar Piastri.
“So, the fact that he is on their radar, I don’t think it should come as any surprise to anybody. He’s one of the most impressive drivers in Formula 1, and he’s probably the guy that you would want to lead your team.”
The Contract Dispute of 2022
Piastri’s 2022 contract situation was a significant point of contention. The dispute began after Sebastian Vettel’s retirement led to Fernando Alonso moving from Alpine to Aston Martin. At the time, Piastri was a reserve driver for Alpine and had spent several years in their development program.
He was seen as a rising star who was expected to step up soon. The team even announced Piastri as one of their new drivers, alongside Esteban Ocon.
However, Piastri later denied this in a tweet, stating that he had not signed any contract with Alpine. This situation coincided with Daniel Riccardo’s departure from McLaren at the end of the 2022 season, which sparked rumors of a contract between McLaren and Piastri.
The FIA Contract Recognition Board reviewed the situation and ultimately determined that McLaren’s contract with Piastri was valid, not Alpine’s. This decision has shaped Piastri’s career trajectory so far.
A Look at the Past and Future
The controversy surrounding Piastri’s contract has been well-documented and remains a topic of discussion among fans and analysts alike. His journey from being a reserve driver to securing a seat with McLaren has been a testament to his talent and determination.
As the Formula One landscape continues to evolve, the possibility of Piastri joining Red Bull remains a subject of speculation. With his consistent performance and composure, it’s clear that he has the potential to thrive in any team environment.
