SCAN Dockworkers’ Day 2026 to Champion Green Ports and Sustainable Practices

The Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) is set to host the significant SCAN Dockworkers’ Day 2026, an event dedicated to celebrating the indispensable contributions and unwavering dedication of Nigeria’s dockworkers. This year’s commemoration will place a strong emphasis on the critical importance of adopting environmentally friendly practices and embracing modern technologies within Nigeria’s vital seaports, aligning with the broader industry’s commitment to sustainability.

The pivotal event is scheduled to take place on May 28, 2026, at Rockview Hotels Apapa, Lagos, with proceedings commencing promptly at 10:00 AM. The overarching theme for this year’s celebration, “Green Ports: Sustainable Practices For Dockworkers,” will serve as the guiding principle for insightful discussions among a diverse group of key stakeholders within the maritime sector. This esteemed gathering will include industry leaders, influential policymakers, and passionate environmental advocates, all converging to shape the future of Nigeria’s maritime landscape.

The “Green Port” initiative is designed to significantly enhance the environmental performance of seaports across the nation. This ambitious undertaking aims to achieve this enhancement while simultaneously ensuring the economic viability of these crucial hubs and robustly supporting ongoing maritime trade, which is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy.

Attendees will have the opportunity to delve into the remarkable achievements of dockworkers, recognizing their integral role in sustaining the nation’s economic growth. Furthermore, the event will focus on outlining concrete pathways to bolster their roles and responsibilities within the rapidly emerging green economy, ensuring they are at the forefront of sustainable maritime operations.

In a joint statement, SCAN Chairman Moses Ebosele and Organising Committee Chairman Yusuf Babalola highlighted the significance of the event. “SCAN Dockworkers’ Day serves as a vital platform to acknowledge the essential contributions of dockworkers to our economy,” they stated. “Simultaneously, it addresses the urgent need for the adoption of sustainable practices within our ports.”

The statement further underscored the evolving nature of the shipping industry: “As the shipping industry evolves, it is crucial that we equip our dockworkers with the knowledge and tools necessary to thrive in a green economy.” This sentiment reflects a forward-looking approach, preparing the workforce for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The organizers have confirmed an impressive lineup of speakers and participants. The President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, Alhaji Aminu Umar, will deliver the keynote address, offering his expert insights into the industry’s trajectory. Serving as the Chairman of the occasion will be Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, the Deputy President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and former President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), bringing a crucial labor perspective to the discussions.

Goodwill messages are expected from a distinguished array of leaders, including:
* Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)
* Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA)
* Dr. Pius Ukeyima Akutah, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC)
* Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority

Beyond these formal addresses, the event will feature dynamic interactive panel discussions involving key personalities from across the maritime industry. These sessions, coupled with dedicated networking opportunities, are meticulously designed to foster the sharing of invaluable insights on sustainable maritime practices and to collaboratively envision the future of dockworking in Nigeria.
