Former Airline Officer Transferred to Prosecution Amidst Murder Allegations, Cites “Divine Retribution”
A 50-year-old former airline first officer, Kim Dong Hwan, has been transferred to the prosecution in Busan, South Korea, facing serious charges including murder, attempted murder, and preparation for murder. The arrest stems from an alleged fatal stabbing of a fellow airline captain and an attempted strangulation of another.
The transfer occurred on the 26th, following an investigation at the Busanjin Police Station. As Kim was escorted from the detention center, he vociferously declared his actions to be “divine retribution of ‘Nemesis’ for the arrogance of ‘Hubris.'” He was observed wearing a gray long-sleeved T-shirt and slippers, his hands bound with ropes and handcuffs.
Kim’s impassioned pronouncements continued as he boarded the transport vehicle. He loudly condemned what he termed “Hubris’ that allows vicious vested interests to destroy an individual’s life,” and described the situation as “the divine retribution of mad Nemesis.”
These terms, rooted in ancient Greek mythology, carry significant meaning. Hubris refers to excessive pride or arrogance, often leading to downfall, while Nemesis embodies the concept of divine retribution against such overconfidence.
When questioned by reporters upon his arrival at the Busan District Prosecutors’ Office, Kim’s defiant stance remained. In response to a query about any message for the bereaved family, he retorted, “Do the bereaved family have anything to say to me?” He also expressed indifference to the public disclosure of his personal information, stating, “Feel free to disclose it. Expose all of my past.”

Allegations and Investigation Details
Kim Dong Hwan is suspected of fatally stabbing an airline captain, identified as “A,” in his 50s, with a weapon. The incident took place in an apartment in Busanjin-gu, Busan, around 5:30 a.m. on the 17th. Captain A was a former colleague of Kim’s.
The investigation has also revealed an earlier, unsuccessful attempt by Kim to kill another airline captain, “B,” in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, on the 16th, the day prior to the Busan murder. This attempt involved strangulation.
Evidence gathered by the police indicates that Kim harbored deep-seated grudges against at least six captains, including “A.” These individuals were seniors from the Air Force Academy and former colleagues. Kim had allegedly been meticulously tracking their movements for months, identifying their residences and scouting locations for his planned attacks.
During initial police interrogations, Kim reportedly confessed to an intention to “kill four people” and claimed to have been preparing for this for “three years.” Law enforcement authorities believe that had Kim not been apprehended, he would have proceeded with further murder attempts on two more individuals within days.
Legal Proceedings and Information Disclosure
Prior to his transfer to the prosecution, the Busan District Court issued a bench warrant for Kim Dong Hwan on the 20th. This decision followed a pre-arrest hearing, where concerns about Kim’s potential flight risk were cited as justification for the warrant.
Subsequently, on the 24th, the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency convened a deliberation committee to review the disclosure of personal information. The committee concluded that Kim’s personal details should be made public.
