President Tinubu to Inaugurate Key Projects in Adamawa Amidst Defection Speculation
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to embark on a significant one-day official visit to Adamawa State, a trip anticipated to focus on the inauguration of substantial infrastructure developments and high-level discussions with prominent political figures, traditional leaders, and various stakeholders. This visit occurs shortly after the President’s engagement in Kebbi State, underscoring a period of active presidential outreach across the nation.
The President’s itinerary in Adamawa State, specifically within the state capital, Yola, and the adjoining Jimeta area, includes the commissioning of several critical projects. These developments are poised to enhance the region’s infrastructure and public services.
Key Projects Slated for Inauguration:
- Eight-Lane Galadima Aminu Road: This major road project connects Gimba directly to the state capital, Yola, promising improved transportation and connectivity within the region.
- Model School: A comprehensive educational facility designed to cater to pre-primary, primary, and junior secondary education, aiming to bolster educational access and quality for the youth.
- Multipurpose Hall: A new facility intended to serve various community and official functions, fostering social and civic engagement.
- Remodelled High Court: An upgraded judicial facility, signifying a commitment to strengthening the legal infrastructure and accessibility of justice.
- Newly Built Officers’ Complex: This addition is expected to enhance the operational capacity and living conditions for security personnel.
- Renovated Government House: A refurbishment of the state’s primary administrative building, reflecting an investment in the state’s governance infrastructure.
The timing of President Tinubu’s visit has amplified political discourse within Adamawa State, particularly concerning the future political alignment of the incumbent Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri. The state capital, Yola, has recently been adorned with a noticeable surge of branding associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading to renewed speculation about Governor Fintiri’s potential defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
On-the-ground observations in Yola reveal a significant presence of APC flags and billboards, with reports indicating the removal of some PDP insignia from prominent locations. This visual transformation has fueled widespread speculation about an imminent political shift by Governor Fintiri. Notably, along the Yola International Airport Road, PDP campaign materials have been conspicuously replaced by those of the APC.
Workers have been observed undertaking rapid beautification efforts in major streets, including the repainting of road kerbs, in preparation for the presidential visit. Security has been visibly heightened, with heavily armed personnel and armoured vehicles deployed to strategic points to ensure a secure environment for the President’s engagements.
Political Negotiations and Defection Rumours
Officials from both the state and national levels of the APC have publicly acknowledged ongoing discussions with Governor Fintiri. Unnamed sources within the House of Representatives, representing Adamawa State, have claimed that Governor Fintiri has already briefed senior PDP figures about his intentions to defect following the President’s visit, suggesting that the presidential trip is a component of broader political engagements.
Conversely, the Adamawa PDP has sought to downplay the significance of the visible changes in street branding. The party’s publicity secretary, Victor Dogo, stated that political allegiances are not determined by roadside decorations but by tangible development and results. He framed President Tinubu’s visit as an act of cooperation on governance, aimed at inaugurating projects with a direct impact on the lives of citizens, rather than an indicator of partisan realignment.
Regarding the possibility of Governor Fintiri’s defection, Dogo asserted that while it is not a criminal offense for the governor to switch parties, the PDP leadership and membership in Adamawa State would likely follow his lead. He emphasized that the party’s focus is on what the governor represents – national unity and development – rather than solely on party affiliation.
Governor Fintiri himself has previously commented on the nature of politics, stating that it is fundamentally about serving the people. He indicated that if his constituents desired his move to the APC, he would feel compelled to follow their wishes.
Rumours linking Governor Fintiri to the APC have been circulating since at least 2024. At that time, the Adamawa APC spokesperson, Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi, publicly stated that negotiations were underway, expressing confidence that the governor would join the APC before the 2026 midterm, and certainly before the 2027 general elections. He assured that the individuals involved in these discussions were reputable, suggesting a high likelihood of Fintiri aligning with the ruling party.
Further substantiating these claims, the National Vice Chairman of APC North East, Mustapha Salihu, confirmed in December 2025 that negotiations were indeed ongoing between Governor Fintiri and the APC. He reiterated that political transitions are a constitutional right and that the APC would welcome Fintiri to contribute to national development.
A PDP member of the House of Representatives from Adamawa, speaking anonymously, corroborated the assertion that Governor Fintiri intends to defect to the APC immediately after the President’s visit. This lawmaker indicated that the governor has formally informed key PDP figures of his plans and that the presidential visit serves to provide official recognition within the context of these negotiations. The efforts to bring Governor Fintiri into the APC reportedly commenced during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, this same lawmaker ruled out the possibility that all PDP National Assembly members from the state would follow the governor to the APC.
