A Real-Life Wedding Unfolds During Super Bowl Halftime Spectacle

The Super Bowl halftime show, a stage renowned for its electrifying performances and dazzling displays, played host to an unforgettable moment in 2026: a genuine on-field wedding. The on-field nuptials, confirmed by NBC News’ Rohan Nadkarni, weren’t just a staged event for entertainment; they were the culmination of a unique invitation exchange between a couple and global superstar Bad Bunny.

Nadkarni revealed on X that the couple had initially extended an invitation to Bad Bunny for their wedding. In a remarkable turn, the artist reciprocating by inviting them to exchange vows during his highly anticipated halftime performance at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. This heartwarming detail was further corroborated by a separate source who confirmed to the Daily Mail that the couple was “legally married during the halftime show.”

The unexpected wedding quickly became a major talking point on social media, with many viewers expressing their delight and sending well wishes to the newlyweds. Online reactions poured in, with one user commenting, “Something struck me about them and that’s what it looked like to me. I honestly thought to myself this looks like it’s really them getting married.” Another viewer shared their surprise, exclaiming, “Holy cow! I literally was like ‘what if that’s a real wedding.’ Awesome!”

The genuine joy and emotion of the bride and groom did not go unnoticed. One viewer observed, “I thought they were actors but when the cameras cut to them a second time and I saw how smiley and happy the bride was I was like, ‘oh….maybe that WAS real omg!'” The sentiment was echoed by another who stated, “Said another user: ‘Amazing. Guess that was the “dress” everyone was freaking out about. May God bless their marriage today and always.'” The authenticity was so apparent that one viewer remarked, “It’s kinda crazy everyone in the comments (myself included) could tell they were a real couple, good for them.”

However, the integration of a live wedding into the halftime show also sparked a broader discussion about the evolving nature of the event. One viewer mused, “So the Super Bowl halftime just became a real wedding venue? Cool story, but also kind of wild, the NFL is supposed to be football, not reality TV meets concert meets ceremony. At what point does the halftime show stop being about the game entirely?”

Bad Bunny’s Powerful Showcase of Puerto Rican Culture

Beyond the romantic interlude, Bad Bunny’s halftime performance was a vibrant and impactful celebration of Puerto Rican culture on a global stage. The artist, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, delivered a set that was accurately predicted to be a landmark moment for Latino representation in entertainment.

He kicked off his performance with a string of his massive reggaeton hits, including “Tití Me Preguntó” and “Yo Perreo Sola.” His re-emergence atop a replica of a “casita” (little house) from his Puerto Rican residency, a nod to Cardi B’s appearance at his “pari de marquesina” (house party), added a personal touch. The show then escalated as he dramatically crashed through the roof, with Daddy Yankee’s iconic “Gasolina” briefly playing, a clear tribute to the pioneering Puerto Rican artists who paved the way for the global success of Latin trap.

Addressing the massive crowd in Spanish, Bad Bunny introduced himself, “Mi nombre Antonio Martínez Ocasio,” and delivered a powerful message of self-belief: “Y si hoy estoy aquí en el Super Bowl 60, es porque nunca, nunca dejé de creer en mí y tú también deberías de creer en ti, vales más de lo que piensas.” He translated this to English, stating, “My name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and if I´m here today at Super Bowl 60 it’s because I never, ever stopped believing in myself and you should also believe in yourself, you´re worth more than you think.”

The setlist continued with the strings of his song “Monaco,” leading into a surprise appearance by Lady Gaga. She joined Bad Bunny for a rendition of “Die with a Smile,” her collaboration with Bruno Mars, accompanied by a lively salsa band. This segment provided Bad Bunny with an opportunity for a stylish wardrobe change into a white suit, channeling a classic “salsero” vibe. He then transitioned into “Baile Inolvidable” and “NuevaYol,” featuring a block party atmosphere. During this part of the show, he shared a celebratory shot with Tonita, the owner of the Caribbean Social Club in Brooklyn, one of the last remaining Puerto Rican social clubs in New York City.

The performance took a politically charged turn with Ricky Martin’s rendition of “Lo Que Pasó a Hawaii” (What Happened to Hawaii), a song often seen as a call for Puerto Rico’s autonomy. The stage was set with jibaros, dressed in traditional pavas, climbing power poles that dramatically exploded, a stark visual metaphor for Puerto Rico’s recurring blackouts and its struggling power grid. This segued into a poignant performance of his 2022 track “El Apagón” (The Blackout), a direct reference to the devastation of Hurricane Maria, its aftermath, and the ongoing frustration over chronic power outages.

For approximately 13 minutes, under the sponsorship of Apple Music and Roc Nation, all eyes were fixed on Bad Bunny as he commanded the halftime stage. Notably, his entire performance was delivered in Spanish, reflecting his artistic integrity as all his music is recorded in his native language, despite his collaborations with English-speaking artists. The only English vocals came from Lady Gaga. The set concluded with Bad Bunny extending his blessings, first saying, “God Bless America,” and then naming countries across the Caribbean, Central, and South America, before powerfully declaring, “And my mother land, Puerto Rico.” He closed out his performance with “DtMF” as he walked off the stadium grounds.

A Superstar’s Journey to the Global Stage

Bad Bunny’s dominance as one of the most-streamed artists globally was undeniable, and his Super Bowl halftime performance solidified his status on the biggest American stage. This wasn’t his first foray into the Super Bowl halftime show; he previously appeared in 2020 alongside Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, contributing to a pivotal moment that helped usher in a crossover era for Latin music in the 2000s with their bilingual hits.

The 2026 performance served as a crowning achievement for the 31-year-old global superstar, whose journey from working at an Econo supermarket in Puerto Rico just a decade prior is nothing short of extraordinary. This year has been particularly monumental, with Bad Bunny taking home Album of the Year at the 2026 Grammys for “Debí Tirar Más Fotos.” This album, a masterful fusion of traditional Borinquen genres like bomba, plena, salsa, and música jíbara with contemporary styles such as reggaeton, trap, and pop, marked a historic first: an all-Spanish language album winning the coveted top prize.

True to the nature of major headliners, Bad Bunny kept the specifics of his halftime performance under wraps. However, many had anticipated a politically charged set, given his past criticisms of former President Donald Trump and his “ICE out” declaration while accepting an award at the Grammys. His recent tour deliberately bypassed the continental U.S., a decision he cited in interviews as being partly motivated by concerns that his fans might be targeted by immigration agents.

During a press conference prior to the event, Bad Bunny spoke with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden, promising a “huge party” and jokingly advising viewers to learn to dance rather than necessarily learn Spanish to enjoy his set. He expressed his intention to “bring to the stage, of course, a lot of my culture,” adding, “I don’t want to give any spoilers. It’s going to be fun.” His performance undoubtedly delivered on that promise, offering a spectacle that was both culturally rich and deeply personal.
