Stop Killing Your Lawn: The Watering Myth

The Secret to a Lush Aussie Lawn: Deeper Watering is Key

Is your backyard looking a bit sad, with dry patches and lacklustre growth? Many Aussies, myself included, have been guilty of the quick-fix approach: watering the lawn more frequently, hoping for a greener result. However, the real secret to a thriving lawn isn’t about how often you reach for the hose, but rather how deeply you water. Those frequent, shallow sprinkles might seem effective in the short term, but they actually encourage your grass to develop weak, superficial roots that are ill-equipped to handle dry spells.

Instead of a daily or every-other-day sprinkle, the experts advocate for a less frequent but significantly more thorough watering strategy. This approach trains your grass to seek out moisture deep within the soil, fostering a robust root system that is far more resilient.

Understanding Your Lawn’s Thirst: Deep Soaks Over Sprinkles

According to garden editor Jenny Dillon from Better Homes and Gardens, lawns have a remarkable capacity to adapt. With the right watering techniques, you can train your grass to thrive on as little as one watering session per week, a significant reduction from the every-three-to-four-day routine many follow.

“When you resume watering after the cooler months, it’s crucial to provide a long, deep soak,” Dillon advises. “This encourages the roots to grow deeper, leading to more vigorous and higher-quality turf.”

Tailoring Watering to Your Lawn’s Age and Needs

The amount of water your lawn requires isn’t a one-size-fits-all scenario. It largely depends on whether your lawn is freshly laid or has been established for some time. While the frequency of watering might be on your mind, the ultimate goal is to ensure that moisture penetrates deep into the soil, reaching the root zone.

Newly Planted Lawns: The Critical Establishment Phase

A new lawn can take up to 12 months to fully establish. During this crucial period, consistent watering is paramount to aid the development of deep, strong roots. The aim is to moisten the soil to a depth of approximately 150mm. The exact duration of your watering session will vary depending on your sprinkler system, water pressure, and the type of sprinkler head you’re using. Therefore, it’s best to water slowly and check the soil’s moisture penetration rather than sticking to a rigid time limit.

Established Lawns: Less Frequent, More Profound Watering

Once your lawn has matured, its watering needs become less demanding in terms of frequency but still require deep saturation. Water your established lawn as needed during dry spells, especially if you haven’t had adequate rainfall. The general principle is to water for long enough to allow the moisture to reach the entire root zone, rather than just superficially wetting the surface.

Reading Your Lawn’s Signals: When It’s Thirsty

Your lawn is surprisingly good at communicating its needs. Keep an eye out for these tell-tale signs that it’s crying out for a drink:

  • Wilting or a dull, faded green colour: This is a classic indicator of dehydration.
  • Grass that doesn’t spring back: If you walk across your lawn and your footprints remain visible for an extended period, it suggests the grass blades lack the moisture to regain their upright position.

The Barefoot Test: An Intuitive Approach

A simple and effective way to gauge your lawn’s hydration level is the barefoot test. Walk across the lawn with bare feet. If your footprints are clearly imprinted and the grass blades don’t quickly spring back, it’s a strong signal that it’s time to water.

Preventing Water Waste: The Soak and Resoak Method

If you notice water pooling on the surface or running off your lawn, it’s a sign that the soil is saturated or compacted. In such cases, stop watering and allow the water to soak in before resuming. This not only prevents water wastage but also encourages deeper root growth by allowing the soil to absorb moisture more effectively.

A Practical Watering Schedule for Aussie Lawns

While deep watering is the priority, a general guideline for watering frequency for most Australian lawns can be helpful:

  • Summer: Aim for 1 to 3 watering sessions per week.
  • Spring and Autumn: Approximately once per week is usually sufficient.
  • Winter: Watering is typically only necessary during extended dry or unusually warm periods.

It’s important to reiterate: deeper watering allows the soil to retain moisture for longer periods. This means you can water less often, and your lawn will be better equipped to withstand those scorching hot Australian days.

The Optimal Time to Water Your Lawn

For the best results, especially during the warmer months, watering your lawn in the morning is highly recommended. The cooler temperatures of the early morning minimise evaporation, giving the water ample time to penetrate the soil and reach the root system before the sun’s intensity increases. This strategic timing ensures that your lawn receives the maximum benefit from each watering session.
